Pink Hitachi ZX130LC-5 Excavator Raises Money for Breast Cancer Care

The latest addition to Hampshire based plant hire company Cosham Plant’s fleet of construction machinery is a little different than most Hitachi excavators. The bright pink Hitachi ZX130LC-5 was specially commissioned to support and raise money for Breast Cancer Care, the breast cancer support charity.

The machine was the central element of Cosham Plant’s support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, which is run annually by Breast Cancer Care to promote awareness of the disease and to raise funds for its vital work in supporting those who are living with breast cancer by providing specialist nurses, local services and an emotional support network throughout the UK.

The pink Hitachi ZX130LC-5 will continue to raise money long after this year’s Pink Friday, as all profits earned during its hire will be donated to Breast Cancer Care. Clients will also have the opportunity to add to the pot of donation money if they wish whenever the machine is used. Cosham Plant aims to raise £100,000 for the charity in the next four years, at the end of which the pink Hitachi ZX130LC-5 will be sold, with the money raised from the sale being added to the total amount.

The idea was conceived by Cosham Plant’s Managing Director Louis Silk. Unfortunately, an employee at Cosham Plant was diagnosed with breast cancer, however she is now in remission and well on the road to recovery. It was not just this personal experience that made Louis decide to support Breast Cancer Care, as he explained it was an issue that seemed to be everywhere and was clearly an important one to support.

Louis went on to explain why the charity was a perfect fit for the predominately male construction and plant and machinery hire industries. Often, the first signs of breast cancer are discovered by a husband or boyfriend, so raising awareness and educating more men to know the signs to look out for could well save many lives by diagnosing the condition as early as possible. The pink Hitachi ZX130LC-5 itself will contain information about breast cancer in the cab to help spread educated awareness wherever the machine is used.

Hitachi Construction Machinery (UK), Hitachi Capital Business Finance and Hill Engineering have all helped to realise the pink Hitachi ZX130LC-5 project and have also each donated to the money being raised.

Over 50,000 women and 350 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Around 570,000 people are estimated to be living with it today and that number is predicted to rise to over 1.2 million by 2030.
