Powerhouse performance persuasive for steel works

A BUSY steel works’ contractor has invested in a pair of high-performance screeners, after they exceeded all expectations while on hire.

Harsco Metals and Minerals initially rented two Terex Finlay 693+ Supertrak machines to tackle a difficult clay-like product at its site in Scunthorpe.

But the company was so impressed by the powerhouse performance of the plant that it has now turned the short-term deal into a permanent one.

Stephen East, operations manager at Harsco Metals and Minerals, says the machines – supplied by Finlay Plant Northern – are processing material that other plant has struggled with in the past.

He added: “The Terex Finlay 693+ Supertraks performed so well on site during the hire period that the decision to bring them in permanently was quite easy in the end.

“The plant is dealing with very difficult and hard-wearing material - something that our other machines have had major problems with.

“The products they’re delivering is ideal and we’re able to supply our customers with exactly what they need.”

One of the machines screens a difficult clay-like material with an approximate throughput of 2,000 tonnes during a 12-hour shift.

From this material comes two products, 1,500 tonnes of a 10-50mm product which is used in the iron making process, as well as the remaining -10mm product. The quality of both is of the upmost importance to Harso Metals and Minerals.

The other plant is fed with steel scrap, produced internally from the steel making process. This machine produces up to 1,000 tonnes per day of -10mm product for ironmaking, as well as approximately 100 tonnes of a 10-50mm product.

The plant features a double deck 20’ x 5’ screen box, which can be hydraulically adjusted to an angle between 18° and 30°.

It boasts a combination of quick wedge tensioning on the top deck and hydraulic tensioning on the bottom, guaranteeing that mesh set-up and change-out times are kept to a minimum.

The decks provide highly efficient screening capacities even at small aggregate sizes.

Mr East added: “We’ve been working with the Finlay Group for more than 20 years and we’ve had 30-plus machines from them.

“We keep going back to them because of the top-quality machines combined with the great customer service we receive.”

Finlay Plant Northern is part of the Finlay Group, which comprises of 11 stand-alone companies offering the most modern and diverse range of material processing equipment available in the UK.

Martin Nairn, of Finlay Plant Northern, said: “I’m delighted the Terex Finlay 693+ Supertraks are performing well on site.

“These screeners are designed to withstand the demands of today’s high-production operator - making them the ideal package for Harsco Metals and Minerals.”
