New hard drive shredder ensures recycling process is safe and secure

Safe & Secure Logistics has boosted the capacity of its WEEE recycling service to pave the way for further growth. 

The Slough-headquartered firm has invested in a new hard drive shredder which will enable the confidential destruction team to comfortably – and compliantly – process over 3,000 hard drives per week.

The UNTHA RS40 shredder has just been delivered to SAS Logistics’ Northampton site and thanks to its ‘plug and play’ technology, it was operational within the hour. But that same technology – plus the machine’s compact footprint – will mean the RS40 can easily be loaded onto a vehicle for additional use as a mobile shredder.

In either scenario, the four-shaft system will produce a homogenous output fraction of 15mm which, coupled with the liberation of materials within the hard drives, will ensure optimum recycling rates.

Commenting on the investment, SAS Logistics’ managing director Lee Spendlove said: “We have established a prominent industry position due to the robustness of our processes from start to finish. To uphold this, we only invest in best-in-class technology, from the fleet we deploy to transport secure materials, through to the machinery we use for processing.

“The market is crowded with shredders we could have used but we opted for the most proven solution, in terms of reliability, throughputs and confidential waste destruction compliance.”

Previously only able to tackle 250 hard drives per day due to the limitations of its previous shredder, SAS Logistics now expects to see growth of 65% within the hard drive recycling side of the business.

“Expansion of this service has been organic to date – we’ve never really pushed it as we knew our capacity was limited,” elaborated Lee. “But we’ve seen UNTHA in action so know exactly what the technology is capable of.

“This is the start of a very exciting time for SAS Logistics. We’ve lots more announcements to come and further services to enhance, so it’s a great case of ‘watch this space’.”

The RS40 has been purchased outright by SAS Logistics, inclusive of an UNTHA service and maintenance package. Whilst predominantly being used by the firm for hard drives, the machine is also capable of handling wider electronic media such as data sticks, mobile phones and video cassettes.
