McDonald International chooses Tomra Sorting's technology for DMR MRF upgrade
Leading plant builder and waste engineering expert, McDonald International Ltd, has chosen TOMRA Sorting as its technology partner for an upgrade project at Quality Recycling Limited’s dry mixed recycling (DMR) MRF.
McDonald International was appointed by Quality Recycling Limited to undertake an upgrade on its 11tph household dry mixed recycling plant in Carrick on Suir, Ireland. Prior to the upgrade, the plant had an early generation TOMRA AUTOSORT unit, which was used to sort news and pams, and a further unit from a different supplier to sort plastics.
Quality Recycling Limited wanted to improve the plant’s performance and capacity, so McDonald International called in TOMRA Sorting, who visited the plant to review the existing equipment and provide guidance on the best bespoke design to increase throughput, achieve higher recovery rates and significantly improve purity rates on Quality Recycling’s chosen target fractions.
Three of TOMRA’s AUTOSORT units have been installed as part of the upgrade. The first captures mixed paper; the second has improved the plant’s plastic sorting capabilities and the third has replaced the unit from the previous supplier. The upgraded DMR MRF now boasts a 30% increase in plant capacity, significantly improved material quality and recovery volumes and a significant reduction in labour costs.
