Baldwin Skip Hire boosts efficiency and sustainability with Pronar shredder and SANY excavators

Norwich-based Baldwin Skip Hire, a long-established, family-run waste management business based just outside Norwich, has significantly enhanced its operational efficiency and sustainability after investing in a Pronar shredder and SANY excavators.

Founded over 30 years ago with a single lorry and approximately 40 skips, the business has grown into a major regional operation managing around 700 skips, operating eight lorries, and running a 10-acre waste transfer station. With increasing waste volumes and diverse material streams, the company faced mounting pressure to improve processing efficiency, maximise payloads, and divert more waste from landfill.

Addressing operational challenges

Handling high volumes of mixed waste - including wood, aggregates, and general waste - Baldwin Skip Hire required a solution that could reduce material volume, accelerate throughput, and optimise outbound logistics.

After an extensive three- to four-year evaluation of recycling shredder manufacturers, Owner Robert Baldwin selected the Pronar Pro.S1 shredder following a demonstration arranged by Global Machinery Solutions at the Norfolk Show.

Versatile shredding solution

The Pronar Pro.S1’s versatility and adaptability across multiple waste streams proved decisive. Its hook-lift design enables easy transport, while interchangeable shaft configurations allow operators to tailor performance to different materials.

Municipal shafts are currently used for processing wood and general waste, delivering a consistent output size of approximately 100mm - ideal for Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) applications. Aggregate shafts are fitted as required to process more demanding materials such as concrete.

Reliable excavation fleet

Supporting site operations, Baldwin Skip Hire operates three SANY SY135C excavators, including a recently supplied unit from Global Machinery Solutions. Known for durability and strong hydraulic performance, the machines are well suited to the demands of high-throughput recycling environments.

One unit has exceeded 12,500 operating hours and remains in active service, underlining the reliability of the equipment. A five-year manufacturer-backed warranty further supports long-term operational confidence.

Implementation and support

Global Machinery Solutions provided a full on-site demonstration of the shredder, followed by operator training for four team members. Ongoing aftersales support and servicing have ensured both the shredder and excavators continue to perform at optimum levels.

Operational gains and sustainability impact

Since introducing the Pronar Pro.S1, Baldwin Skip Hire has reported marked improvements in site efficiency. By shredding and compacting waste more effectively, the company has increased roll-on bin payloads by approximately two tonnes per load - reducing transport movements and lowering haulage costs.

The shredder has also improved material flow across the site, enabling faster and more consistent processing while reducing bottlenecks. Rather than expanding capacity, the business has been able to optimise its existing infrastructure.

Crucially, the ability to produce uniform output has enabled greater diversion of waste into RDF production, reducing reliance on landfill and aligning operations with growing demand for alternative fuel sources.

The machine’s flexibility - switching between municipal and aggregate shafts - ensures it remains a central, multi-functional asset within the business.

“I’d been looking at shredders for three or four years before making a decision,” said Robert Baldwin, Owner of Baldwin Skip Hire. “After seeing the Pronar and having the demo, it just made sense. It’s made the whole site run more efficiently. We’re getting about two tonnes more into each roll-on bin now, which is a big saving.

“The SANY machines are fantastic - robust and well suited to the job. One of ours has done over 12,500 hours and is still going strong. The warranty is a big selling point, and the backup from Global Machinery Solutions has been spot on.”

Jason Purllant, Recycling Sales Manager at Global Machinery Solutions, added: “Robert had done his research and was clear on what he needed the machine to achieve. The Pronar Pro.S1 stood out because of its flexibility and ability to handle different waste streams efficiently. Once it was on site for the demo, it quickly proved its value.

“We’ve continued to support the team with training and aftersales to ensure they’re getting the most from both the shredder and their SANY machines.”
