Leading the Future of Soil Remediation: Tyrone
International Delivers North America’s First Mobile
Soil Washing Facility for Headlands Environmental
In an era where sustainable construction and
environmental responsibility are no longer
optional but essential, Tyrone International has
once again demonstrated its industry leadership
with the successful design, engineering,
manufacture and installation of a state-of-the-
art soil washing facility for Headlands
Environmental in British Columbia, Canada.
This landmark project represents a step change in how
contaminated and excess soils are processed across North
America. As the continent’s first mobile soil washing facility,
the plant is not only a technological breakthrough, but a
powerful case study in how innovative engineering can
transform environmental challenges into long-term economic
and operational opportunities.
This adaptability is central to its value proposition. Unlike
traditional static facilities, the mobile system enables
Headlands Environmental to deploy high-performance soil
washing technology directly where it is needed - supporting
infrastructure, industrial and construction projects across
British Columbia and beyond.
The plant operates as a closed-loop system, integrating
washing, classification and water treatment into a single
cohesive process. This ensures maximum material recovery
while minimising waste, water usage and environmental
impact.
Advanced Processing and Material Recovery
Soil washing is a proven remediation technology that
separates reusable sand, stone and aggregates from
contaminated or excess soils. The process is based on the
principle that contaminants tend to bind to fine particles such
as silt and clay, which can be separated from the coarser,
reusable fractions.
Through a combination of screening, washing, classification
and dewatering, the Tyrone International system transforms
previously unusable waste into valuable construction
materials. Clean sands and aggregates are recovered and
reintroduced into the supply chain, while contaminants are
concentrated into a smaller volume for further treatment.
The scale of the facility highlights its impact. Operating
continuously, it is capable of processing significant volumes of
contaminated soil and achieving high recovery rates,
generating substantial quantities of reusable aggregate each
year and dramatically reducing reliance on landfill disposal.
A Vision for Sustainable Soil Management
The project originated from a clear industry need:
infrastructure and development activity across Canada
continues to generate vast volumes of contaminated and
excess soils, placing growing pressure on landfill capacity and
environmental compliance frameworks.
Recognising this challenge, Headlands Environmental set out
to develop a more sustainable solution - one that would
reduce waste, recover value from materials and future-proof
their operations in a rapidly evolving regulatory and
environmental landscape.
Working in close collaboration with their Canadian dealer
Frontline Washing Systems, Tyrone International was selected
to deliver a fully integrated solution. The project drew on both
Tyrone and Frontline’s expertise across aggregate processing,
soil decontamination and advanced water treatment systems,
ensuring a truly end-to-end wet processing facility.
Engineering a First-of-Its-Kind Solution
At the heart of the installation is a mobile aggregate washing
system engineered by Tyrone International to meet the specific
requirements of large-scale remediation projects.
Designed with flexibility in mind, the complete plant can be
assembled on any site in a matter of weeks and takes the
concept of plug and play to a new level. All the main
components are assembled, wired and tested prior to dispatch
which minimises the installation and commissioning period on
site. Therefore, the entire system can be relocated efficiently if
project requirements change. The mobile wash plant
incorporates several patented technologies which allows easy
transport and rapid deployment on site.
Integrated Water Treatment Excellence
A critical component of any soil washing operation is water
management, and this is an area where Tyrone International’s
expertise is particularly evident.
The facility incorporates a sophisticated water treatment
system designed to recycle and reuse process water within a
closed-loop circuit. This approach not only reduces freshwater
usage but also ensures compliance with increasingly stringent
environmental regulations.
Industry-leading filtration technology, including clarification
systems and filter presses, enables the separation of solids
from process water, producing dry, manageable filter cakes
while returning clean water back into the washing cycle.
This fully integrated approach to water treatment reflects
Tyrone’s holistic engineering philosophy - delivering not just a
wash plant, but a complete environmental solution.
