AggRegain
AggRegain is a free Sustainable Aggregates information service provided by the WRAP Aggregates Programme.
The information service consists of this website and a supporting telephone helpline. The free telephone helpline - 0808 100 2040 - can be used by anyone who requires additional information, or needs any issues clarified.
AggRegain, was launched in February 2003 and, in response to users feedback, has undergone a major programme of expansion and development in 2005 to increase the range of information available. It is designed to assist anyone interested in producing, specifying, purchasing or supplying recycled or secondary aggregates. The information provided comes from a wide variety of sources from within the aggregates and waste management sectors. The service is updated and extended regularly, and anyone wishing to make a contribution or providing advice for the service should contact AggRegain directly.
This free service will play an important role in increasing quality supply of and demand for recycled and secondary aggregates by providing producers, specifiers, buyers and suppliers with a reliable, independent 'one-stop' source of information on which to base procurement and production decisions.
The AggRegain service play a key role in the Delivering Information and Raising Awareness theme's of the Aggregates Programme.

Visit WebsiteBritish Marine Aggregate Producers Association (BMAPA)
The British Marine Aggregate Producers Association (BMAPA) is the trade association for an industry that works 24-hours-a-day, 365-days-a-year helping to satisfy Britain’s needs for aggregates. Our materials underpin some of Britain’s most glamorous projects - but we may also have supplied the sand and gravel from which your home is built.
Think of aggregates and most of us think first of quarries on land. In reality, however, a significant proportion of Britain’s need for aggregates is satisfied from the seabed.
At a time when land-based quarrying is under increasing environmental pressure, this vital marine resource is growing in importance as a means of sustaining the built environment. In doing so, it contributes substantially to the quality of our lives.
Around 21 per cent of the sand and gravel used in England and Wales is now supplied by the marine aggregates industry. It also makes a healthy contribution to our balance of payments through exports to the near continent.
Extraction of marine aggregates involves significantly less than one per cent the UK continental shelf. The industry recognizes, nonetheless, that it works in a sensitive environment and accepts its responsibility to operate with care and concern for other users of the sea.
The British Marine Aggregate Producers Association (BMAPA) believes this challenge should be approached as a partnership with all the other parties involved and actively seeks to minimize the industry’s impact.

IOM3 is a Chartered organisation and can confer Chartered Engineer, Chartered Scientist and Chartered Environmentalist accreditation (C Env is particularly interesting because there's a fast track to it until the end of September). There's a web page for Fellowship http://www.iom3.org/content/fellow .This page is the 'standard' fellowship page, but it is a little misleading because the ‘invitation' route only requires a CV or a one-page summary to be submitted for consideration.
Although the process of application has been made easier, it would only be available to people who have worked within one of the relevant industries for a number of years and made a contribution to growth or technical development. Anyone who is interested in becoming a Fellow of IOM3 should contact David Arthur, head of Member Services, david.arthur@iom3.org

The Contractors Mechanical Plant Engineers
The Contractors Mechanical Plant Engineers, known as the CMPE, has always been concerned about the safe use of mechanical plant on construction sites. Recognising the need for competent plant operators they introduced the Plant Operators Certificate of Competence in 1983.
Through the experience of the members they have developed the Plant Operators Record of Competence and have become involved in providing Quality Safety Awareness Training and Site Assessment.
In 1996/97 the construction industry employed approximately 15% of the UK workforce and were responsible for 90% of the fatal accidents which occurred during that period. This places demands and responsibilities on those who work in the construction and contractors plant sectors to improve these statistics.
The knowledge and experience of our members is drawn upon to develop ways of improving safety in the construction industry. This enables the CMPE to offer a quality service to the Industries and all its Members.

WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) was established in 2001 in response to the UK Government's Waste Strategy 2000 to promote sustainable waste management.
WRAP gained additional responsibilities in 2003 as a result of the Government’s response to the review of waste policy undertaken in 2002 by the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit (Waste Not, Want Not, a Strategy for Tackling the Waste Problem in England). WRAP is set up as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee by DEFRA, the DTI, and the devolved administrations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
WRAP's initial programmes of work concentrate on:
- creating stable and efficient markets for recycled materials and products for the 100 million tonnes of waste accounted for by commercial, industrial and municipal waste (this includes waste from houses, offices and factories)
- specific work in six material streams: aggregates, glass, organics, paper, plastics, and wood, supported by work in three generic areas: financial mechanisms, procurement, and standards.
