Leading recycling, renewable energy and waste management company Viridor and green charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) are calling all businesses, big and small, to reduce the amount of waste they generate to improve their environmental performance and save money for Zero Waste Week (19-27 November).
Coinciding with European Waste Reduction Week, the Zero Waste Week (ZWW) Campaign organised by Viridor and PECT aims to raise awareness amongst the business community to increase landfill diversion through reuse and recycling of materials as well as exploring ways to prevent waste in the first place.
To get the campaign started and help businesses focus on sustainable waste management, on Wednesday 9 November, Viridor hosted an open day at the Materials Recycling Facility in Fengate, Peterborough to demonstrate how recyclables collected from households and businesses in Peterborough and surrounding Cambridgeshire areas are sorted into high quality raw materials and to share tips on how to reduce, reuse and recycle more waste.
Additional resources available for free include a downloadable step-by-step guide for ZWW which is available on Viridors website.
Victor Perez-Mares, communications manager for Viridor, said; “It is estimated that businesses produce six tonnes of waste for every tonne produced by households, costing them millions of pounds every year and in many instances ending up endlessly in landfill.
“With Zero Waste Week we’re aiming to get more organisations and individuals thinking about the waste they produce and what actions they can take to reduce it, reuse it or recycle it — being green is good for business.”
Rachel Huxley, Chief Executive of PECT, said; “Taking part is free and could save your business money. Simple changes can make a big difference — pack your lunch in reusable tubs rather than disposable plastic bags, compost your banana peel, cancel those magazines that show up every week but you never read!
“In the past we have found businesses that have taken part in Zero Waste Week start thinking about rubbish in a completely new light and continue reducing waste to landfill, and saving money, even when the week has ended.”
