New bespoke conveyor solution improves production capacity at SWM Recycling

The South West’s leading independent waste management company, SWM Recycling, which operates eight depots across the region, has taken delivery of a new conveyor solution from Middleton Engineering, to upgrade and increase capacity at its Barnstaple waste recycling operation.

The new in-floor conveyor, designed, fabricated and installed within eight weeks, feeds an existing twin ram baler to process waste paper, card, film and plastics from commercial and local authority customers.

SWM Recycling Director, Shawn Akers explains: “The new conveyor allows us to process larger quantities of recyclable material and improves the speed and efficiency of our baling operation. It’s good news for our growing customer base and ensures we can help to divert even more waste from landfill. Volume is already up by a third and we are now processing 1500 tonnes per month with capacity to take on more business at our Barnstaple depot.”
Design aspects to future proof capacity for the new chain conveyor were key for SWM Recycling. Middletons provided advice on bandwidth and motor sizes, a one metre extension to the in-floor section to improve loading as well as the interface with SWM Recycling’s existing Excel baler.

Easy access for cleaning, to minimise blockages and downtime and integrated systems for operator safety were also essential criteria. Shawn Akers added: “Middleton's provide a premium product and we have been delighted by their advice, customer service and the quality of the conveyor.”
