Saxlund shares silo discharge and bulk material handling expertise for biomass combustion, EfW and alternative fuels

Biomass and bulk material handling specialist Saxlund International will be explaining the latest engineering solutions for optimal storage and transfer of challenging wet and dry bulk materials in the expanding biomass combustion and EfW sectors, including waste wood, fibres, SRF and RDF at RWM 2017.

Fuel handling solutions for small scale biomass combustion, alternative fuel systems including co-firing in the Cement sector and also the rapidly growing EfW and gasification markets will all be featured, with explanations of the some of the design requirements that are needed, and the issues to watch for, to ensure trouble free and fully efficient plant operation.

Current engineering contracts for fuel systems and plant optimisation across the bioenergy sectors will be highlighted including projects in the UK where the company is actively engaged in over 13 wood chip biomass fuel handling and storage solutions, including bioenergy, gasification and cement industries.

These include wood chip fuel feed and storage solutions for Bouygues Energies & Services, at the UK’s largest waste-to-energy gasification plant currently underway at Hoddesdon in Hertfordshire, three biomass fuel handling and storage solutions for Babcock & Wilcox Vølund at power stations located in Sheffield, Teesside and Margam in South Wales and a further three projects for Galliford Try Infrastructure for waste wood gasification facilities under construction in Barry, Boston and Hull.

Surrey County Council’s Eco Park, at Charlton Lane, where lead contractor M+W Group has selected Saxlund for the RDF storage and discharge solution to feed a new gasification facility, will also be covered.

The company will be explaining its design approach for minimising storage and transfer issues for what can be sticky and challenging materials, and how to ensure long term plant durability, uninterrupted operation and minimal operator intervention to clear blockages and material flow.
A key focus will be on activated silo discharge solutions and conveying equipment for a range of materials including wood chips, fibres and saw dust, bark, biomass and alternative fuels. ‘First in, first out’ design principles to minimise compaction and material conglomeration will also be explained.

Saxlund brings over 60 years’ experience and a range of technical solutions including patented Sliding Frame and Push-Floor technology, plus Hydraulic Rotor and Tubefeeder solutions for effective silo discharge, ensuring a consistent metred flow of material to meet downstream processes. These are complemented by a range of transfer technologies refined over a number of years, including Trailer Docking Stations, Bucket Elevators, Screws, enclosed Chain Conveyors and Screens.

According to Managing Director Matt Drew: “A 60 year history in delivering successful bulk material handling solutions combined with leading Push Floor, Sliding Frame and TubeFeeder technology are key reasons clients chose and specify Saxlund solutions again and again. Early design engagement, a clear understanding of material characteristics and the application of appropriate technology remain crucial in delivering resilient trouble free solutions.”

The company will also be discussing the issues and solutions for the water industry, another core market for Saxlund, where sewage sludge handling and truck loading silos are increasingly important, particularly for satellite sewage plants transporting sludge cake to central sites for processing and energy conversion. The focus here is on overhead circular silos with reciprocating Sliding Frame discharge solutions to deliver resilient, low maintenance energy efficient solutions.
