New rapid response service in waste management for London

Bywaters, one of the UK’s largest waste management companies, has just taken delivery of two x 3.5 tonne cage-tipper vehicles to provide a rapid response in in difficult traffic conditions. When local authorities, hospitals, universities or City businesses need rapid removal of unplanned waste either for a missed collection, an office clearance or in response to fire, flood or an environmental incident, Bywaters can now deploy the vehicles.

Designed to reach customers as soon as possible, Bywaters’ new cage-tipper vehicles are small enough to travel through London’s busy traffic more efficiently than larger trucks, without the hindrance of width, height or parking restrictions. In London’s sometimes narrow streets, the small size of these vehicles enables them to carry out kerbside collections with greater efficiency.

The two cage-tipper vehicles are the latest additions to Bywaters’ £7 million fleet of 62 eco-friendly vehicles comprising 25 dustcarts, 5 tail-lift vehicles, 13 skip-loaders, and 17 hook-loaders. All vehicles meet Euro 5/6 emission standards and have heralded quieter operations and a much-reduced carbon emission standard (up to 96% reduction compared to non-Euro 5/6 vehicles). The fleet operates from Bywaters at Bow, East London, which is licensed to process 650,000 tonnes of waste material a year and has one of the UK’s largest materials recycling facilities.

Bywaters’ new cage-tipper vehicles are already working across London and the Home Counties, extending the range of waste removal services that the firm provides to its customers.
The new service is designed to minimise environmental risk and to ensure duty of care obligations are met.

All Bywaters’ vehicles servicing the capital have an on-board Dynafleet program which monitors and tracks both the vehicle’s environmental sustainability and the driver’s driving patterns and behaviour. Reports are generated by Volvo to validate transparency of carbon dioxide emissions, and overall vehicle productivity. In addition, Bywaters’ vehicles are fitted with Dynafleet vehicle tracking and all drivers use digital tacho cards. Exhaust fittings filter out harmful substances like Nitrous Oxide (NOx) and appropriate safety systems, such as 360o cameras and audible alarms to alert the public of their presence. All Bywater’s vehicles are manufactured in the CO2 neutral plant in Ghent, Belgium.

Mark Harbard, Associate Director at Bywaters said: “London’s historic streets were not designed for today’s traffic and width, height and parking restrictions can hinder collections. When time is critical, these vehicles enables us to be more responsive to customer needs and able to offer an improved, more flexible service.”
