MPA Responds to Green Construction Board

In response to the publication of the Green Construction Board’s 2050 Low Carbon Routemap, Dr Pal Chana, Executive Director of MPA Cement, said:

“The Green Construction Board’s routemap calls on individual sectors of the economy to come forward with their own plans to cut carbon by 2050. I am delighted to say that the UK cement industry has not only embraced this challenge but has led the way by publishing its 2050 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reduction Strategy last month.  This is the first time any national cement body in the world has done this and we are proud to be setting the pace.”

The UK cement industry has outlined the necessary action that could see it cut GHG emissions by 81% against a 1990 baseline if carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology is available to the industry and can be economically deployed. If CCS isn't viable in the long term there is an action plan that could see the industry reducing emissions by an ambitious 62%.

“The Strategy will challenge the industry and others in both technical and policy terms, to use every means possible, within strict environmental controls and technical standards requirements, to achieve our common aims”, added Dr Chana.
