Terex Finlay plant generates new revenue stream

A London-based builders’ merchant wholesaler has moved into manufacturing with a Terex Finlay 674 producing single sized aggregate from sea dredged material.

Gill Aggregates has taken delivery of the screener at its Dagenham plant to process ballast into various sized products, for sale across the Capital and the South East.

The machine – supplied by Finlay Plant SE – is producing four sizes of material, a 6mm sand, 6-10mm stone, 10-20mm stone and a 20mm plus reject stone.

It is currently powering through 120 tonnes of material an hour, with the processed sand and stone then packaged on-site – at Gill Aggregate’s high technology plant – into 2.5kg and 40kg bags, or put into the bays at the facility.

Sukh Gill, Depot Manager at Gill Aggregates, said: “The 674 is working really well for us and is proving a solid performer. It is already becoming a very useful part of our operation.

“The machine can take 10 tonnes of ballast in its hopper at a time, which it powers through to produce a great, clean product.

“It’s proving very economical as we previously had to buy in the materials, but now we are able to take unprocessed material and make it into a saleable product ourselves.

“The plant also supports the orderly nature of the site, with its ease of access enabling us to get all around to keep everything running smoothly and free of build-up.”

For more than 10 years Gill Aggregates has provided high quality pre-packed/loose aggregates and haulage to the builders’ merchants sector.

The company’s commitment to innovation, reliability and customer service has seen it become known as one of the leading aggregate suppliers in the UK.

Part of the Gill Group, its main business activities include the supply of bagged and loose aggregates to national and independent builders’ merchants in the South East.

This is the first Terex Finlay machine the business has purchased from Finlay Plant SE, which is part of the Finlay Group of companies.

Leon Sheehy, Finlay Plant SE’s MD, worked closely with the team at Gill Aggregates to introduce the 674 on site.

A compact easily transportable machine that offers operators rapid set up and tear down times, the 674 has three decks giving a large screening area of 170ft2 to provide efficient processing even at small fractions and high capacity.

It includes quick wedge tensioning, access holes and a bottom deck hydraulic tensioning system to reduce time required for mesh changes.

All four discharge conveyors are adjustable and hydraulically fold for transport, with the fourth product ‘oversize plus’ conveyor featuring variable tilt and side slew to accurately discharge material for recirculation and stockpiling.

Leon said: “We started with a hire to scope out the 674’s capability on site before the plant was purchased.

“We are really pleased with its performance. It has made a real difference.”
