Only the best will do for Earthline

Earthline Ltd of Ogbourne St. George, near Marlborough, Wiltshire, has taken delivery of five more Volvo EC220E excavators thanks to the reliability, performance and after-market support it has experienced running Volvo equipment over the last six years according to Managing Director, Philip Coplestone.

The five new twenty-two tonne Volvo models join an ever increasing fleet of Volvo branded excavators and dumptrucks and while Philip takes an objective view of the marketplace when it’s time to replace or add equipment, the main reason for choosing Volvo is down to the reliability, performance and robustness of the product as well as first class after-market support, in his opinion. “This time around when we looked at the twenty-tonne excavator market, it was our view that there was a massive difference in the build quality of the Volvo EC220E compared to the competition and, as we’ve experienced with our existing D models, the output is far superior to other makes as well,” says Philip. “But that’s only part of the equation. In our line of business, it’s crucial we get the best back-up and after sales service wherever our equipment is working and Volvo Construction Equipment has not been found wanting in this regard,” he says.

“Ever since we purchased our original second-hand EC700C and subsequent EC480, EC380’s and EC220’s, we’ve found Volvo’s support to be solid and most importantly - consistent,” continues Philip. However Earthline Ltd has opted to take out Volvo’s Blue Service Agreements on the new models for total peace of mind.

Powered by a six-cylinder Volvo engine developing 174 nett hp, the EC220E offers the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. For example, pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves, whilst maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. When Eco-mode is selected, the machine provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions.

The Volvo Care Cab offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent all-round visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14-vent, climate control system. An adjustable easy to read LCD colour monitor provides real-time data on machine functions, important diagnostic information and a wide variety of work tool settings. The monitor also doubles as a rear-view camera.

The new machines have been deployed across the company’s quarries, recycling sites, and inert landfill sites. They join a mixed fleet of excavators, dozers, loading shovels and articulated hauler. However, it is Earthline’s haulage and road transport business that is at the heart of the twenty-three year-old family run firm - in the hands of the second generation with brothers Philip and Matt Coplestone.

Earthline Ltd, the largest haulage company covering an area from Banbury in Oxfordshire to Farnham in Surrey, currently operates 80 tippers of its own with another 20 on permanent hire besides articulated rigs, sweepers and other miscellaneous transport. “In essence, the equipment, quarries, and recycling sites are there to feed our haulage fleet delivering virgin and recycled product across the region,” says Philip.
