MPA focuses on health and wellbeing at Hillhead 2016

The Mineral Products Association (MPA) has showcased ‘Securing Sustainable Health & Wellbeing Together’ at the Hillhead 2016 in Buxton, Derbyshire.

Building on the new focus on health issues announced at the MPA Health and Safety Awards in 2015, the MPA organised a range of health and safety activities at this year’s Hillhead event. The occupational health provider, Industrial Diagnostic Company, provided work health checks by qualified nurses, and visitors could use pedal power to create their own energising smoothie. There was also an opportunity to participate in a ‘Grip Strength’ competition with prizes for the three best results at the show.

A wellbeing section on the stand gave visitors the opportunity to find out important information on how we can all best contribute to our own health. Anonymous health data collected at the event will contribute to the ‘MPA’s Big Health Survey’. This data will be used to help analyse the industry’s health.
Commenting, Kevin Stevens, MPA’s Health and Safety Manager said: “Health and wellbeing has been elevated to a position equivalent to that of safety by the MPA. Our theme this year reflects that decision and provides an opportunity for the workforce to undergo a simple health check and donate the results to our survey of the industry’s health. This will enable people to get a better understanding of their own health and help us to build a picture of the industry’s health and where we can best apply our resources to make a difference.”

The quarrying exhibition was hosted at MPA member Tarmac’s Hillhead Quarry, near Buxton, Derbyshire from 28–30 June. More than 460 UK and international suppliers of plant, equipment, materials and services for the quarrying, construction and recycling industries were in attendance with a huge range of exhibits on static display and/or live demonstration.
