Solent Aggregates is a subsidiary of United Marine Aggregates. Based in Chichester the company operates sand and gravel wharves along the south coast. United Marine Aggregates is also a joint venture between Hanson and Tarmac and it is one of the largest suppliers of marine sand and gravel in the UK, and currently operates a fleet of four dredgers in licensed areas of the North Sea, English Channel and Bristol Channel and North West.
The Shoreham site is a marine dredged aggregate site that receives incoming material from ships owned by UMA and Hanson Aggregates Marine. Its main purpose being to wash, screen and grade the incoming material. Finished products are then distributed from the site to the customers of UMA and Hanson Aggregates. Products range from a sand up to and including +40mm material; in particular 0-4mm- medium concreting sand is produced for Hanson concrete plants and Tarmac block-making plants.
Due to its coastal location the original plant suffered badly due to the effects of coastal weather, in particular the effect of salt on the main structures. Mindful of this ongoing deterioration Solent Aggregates made the decision to refurbish the plant and awarded Centristic of Newton Abbott the task of the staged refurbishment.
This has been completed in several stages with the new plant constructed in galvanized steel which provides better weather protection. The latter stages of the refurbishment have included replacing the sand screw classifier, dewatering screen and part of the sand system, in particular the replacement of two sand separators.
Linatex successfully tendered for the replacement of two Krebs cyclones with their unique sand separators at the Shoreham site.
Based on the above specification Linatex recommended the installation of two HK 150 (630) extended sand separators to ensure the capture of fines material with recovery at 90% of the material retained at 63 micron. Additionally, the separators maintain a constant moisture content of the discharge, irrespective of the inflow density/quantity of solids.
The installation was completed by Centristic engineers as part of the overall project.
Colin Ford - Site Foreman, commented, "We are very pleased with the performance of the two HK150 sand separators, having increased the sand plant through-put by approximately 15%, we are still retaining the correct amount of fines. Also there have been additional benefits from the performance of the vacuum system with a dryer material being discharged onto our dewatering screen".
