As the pioneer of railway development, the UK is at the forefront of building even bigger and better rail system, and liberalisation within the industry is doing its part to foster a competitive supply chain, that is significantly contributing to the UK economy.
The rail industry currently accounts for £7 billion per year, providing in excess of 80,000 UK jobs. At present, there are a number of major and exciting developments underway, including Crossrail, Thameslink, Intercity Express Programme, and High Speed 2, notwithstanding those that are in the immediate pipeline.
This renewed infrastructure is set to pave the way for the extra 400 million rail journeys that are forecast on the mainline network by 2020. Impressive figures, especially when considered in context of the unprecedented growth the industry has experienced of late, with a record high 1.5 billion journeys completed annually in 2015.
Critical to that success, has been the buoyant, diverse and innovative suppliers that are getting on board. But while there may be growing demand, stringent procedures and regulations doesn’t make that an easy feat to achieve.
One company that has managed to attain such certification recently, is Cambridgeshire based, Construction business, Mick George Ltd. The company has successfully been accredited on ‘The Railway Industry Supplier Qualification Scheme (RISQS), previously known as ‘Achillies Link-up’.
Whilst the initiative is aimed at providing organisations a platform to position themselves in front of the major ‘Rail Contractors’ that dominate the industry, Mick George Ltd are certainly no stranger to the majority of the influential players, and already have a ‘foothold’ having proven their credentials on a sub-contracting basis across a number of other exciting sectors.
The business which predominantly operates within the East Anglia and East Midlands region, has clearly outlined its intent in the new sector, by expressing an interest of involvement within tender processes nationwide for the services in which it specialises. This is something that will definitely appeal to procurement officers from infrastructure buyers, Network Rail, Transport for London and other train operating companies.
Having accomplished accreditation after rigorous assessment and audit of various components, to be enrolled on the initiative, Mick George Ltd can now provide a wide range of complex services including Earthworks, Civils, Demolition and Remediation services, as well as Waste Management and Aggregate & Ready Mix Concrete Supply.
All of the above can be integrated alongside the companies’ fully compliant ability to remove and dispose of all rail associated debris, including contaminated soils and hazardous waste. They’re also a Licensed Asbestos Contractor.
Further installing confidence, the company has actively invested in a number of external ‘safety systems’, including ‘Sentinal’ and the ‘Confidential Incident Reporting and Analysis System’ to support the new venture. Mick George Rail will be headed up by Operations Director Dean Whitcombe, who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in this sector from his previous Contracts Director role at Pryor Rail.
