New DL220-5 Stage IV Wheel Loader from Doosan Bobcat

Doosan Bobcat EMEA has launched the new high performance DL220-5 wheel loader, the latest addition to the company’s ‘DL-5’ generation of Stage IV compliant machines. This compact, manoeuvrable wheel loader is ideal for a variety of applications, such as housebuilding, commercial developments, civil engineering, road construction and maintenance, land improvement/water control, crop and livestock production, snow removal and scrap handling.

Supplied in the same distinctive external styling used throughout the DL-5 range, the new DL220-5 wheel loader offers high productivity and fuel economy, with features such as a new high comfort cab, a powershift transmission with optimised hydraulic pumps, multiple power modes, Z-bar lift arm, return to dig and limited slip differentials on both the front and rear axles. These features are standard on the new DL220-5 wheel loader unlike other machines on the market where they are options and many have been developed to optimise fuel efficiency.

The DL220-5 wheel loader is powered by the well-proven 6-cylinder, turbocharged Doosan DL06P water-cooled diesel engine which offers convenience and lower costs by meeting Stage IV emission regulations without the need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF), through the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalyst reduction (SCR) after-treatment technologies. The DL06P engine provides a power output of 119 kW (160 HP) at 2100 RPM and a maximum torque of 735 Nm at 1400 RPM.

The DL220-5 is manufactured with a standard Z-bar lift-arm linkage and is ideal for scooping, loading, carrying and general construction tasks. For operators requiring additional dumping capabilities, the DL220-5 is also available with a high-lift Z-bar configuration, extending the dump height 457 mm above that of the standard DL220-5. This configuration is ideal for loading material into high-sided trucks or high hoppers, building stockpiles or handling solid waste.

The fully automatic transmission — with three selectable transmission modes — utilises a vehicle control unit, which means the engine’s computer and transmission control system constantly communicate with each other to reduce fuel consumption and increase performance.

Limited-Slip Differentials
With limited-slip differentials as a standard feature, the DL220-5 wheel loader has more traction when digging, grading or loading trucks. To manoeuvre in tough terrain, the limited-slip differential also allows the wheel with the most traction to receive the proper torque, providing superior tractive effort to ensure operators can keep working, even in soft or wet ground conditions.

Operators on the DL220-5 wheel loader can choose between three work modes that adjust the loader’s performance to the application and deliver the right balance of power and fuel economy. The operator simply pushes a button to toggle between the following work modes:

  • Economy (Eco): reduces fuel consumption for low-demand applications
  • Normal: balances fuel consumption for everyday digging, grading and lifting tasks
  • Power: provides superior power and performance for heavy-duty conditions and truck-loading tasks

To help save valuable diesel fuel, auto idle and auto-shutdown come as standard. Auto idle automatically reduces the engine RPM to standby idle when the steering wheel or joystick control lever are not utilised for a few seconds. When enabled, auto shutdown will stop the engine when the preset idle time is met. Operators can configure the idle time from 3 to 60 minutes.

CoreTMS Fleet Management System as Standard
The DL220-5 is factory-installed with the new CoreTMS state-of-art wireless fleet monitoring system, a feature not previously available as standard on Doosan wheel loaders and now incorporated in all new DL-5 generation machines. The new CoreTMS system is a tool designed specifically for the Doosan range, providing comprehensive information about machine performance in a dual mode (satellite, Mobile network).

The CoreTMS system offers a web-based fleet and asset management solution which is very useful for managing the performance and security of machines and promoting preventative maintenance. The system can support multiple Doosan machines in different locations, helping customers to monitor machine utilisation rates to assess that the right mix of machines is being used; it can also guide drivers to help them to operate equipment with higher efficiency and to locate replacement machines in the event of maintenance work or breakdowns, all under the umbrella of vigorous anti-theft and theft recovery protection systems.

New High Comfort Cab
The new cab demonstrates how Doosan has placed operator comfort at the very centre of its design priorities. Offering generous headroom and an ultra-comfortable, fully adjustable (vertical and horizontal), heated Grammer air suspension seat, the DL-5 cab features a new steering column design giving more clearance for the operator’s legs and knees. The steering wheel can also be tilted and moved telescopically to match the operator’s preferred position.

The increased space, better visibility and plentiful storage space in the new cab allows operators to work for hours without fatigue or discomfort. Meeting ROPS/FOPS regulations, the cab also offers a wide emergency exit (located on the right hand side) to provide fast and easy evacuation in critical situations.

The 5.7 inch full colour LCD panel is suitable for day and night work. The user-friendly monitor has two customisable screen displays to suit the operator’s preference, giving a full readout of machine settings and maintenance data. The rear-view camera greatly enhances visibility and safety. The screen in the cab shows the operator what the camera sees and includes several lines to help judge distances; it also has other functions, including light intensity control, viewing angle control, language setting and power on/off setting.

On the control panel, all the switches are clearly arranged and within easy reach of the operator. Rocker type switches have been replaced by a multi-selection touch pad. Accurate and smooth joystick controls provide further comfort and operators can save time and reduce the number of operations with the ‘Boom Kick-out’ and ‘Return-to-Dig’ systems. These functions are operated electronically from inside the cab.

Routine Service Made Easy
The DL220-5 has been designed for ease of maintenance and includes additional oil sampling ports to improve preventive maintenance procedures. In addition, various fluid pressures are now viewable from the dash panel, allowing monitoring from the cab.

Uptime is increased by features such as a fuel filter separator with double filtration that is easily accessible behind metal panels that protect internal components. The high efficiency engine air cleaner prevents abrasive particulate matter from entering the engine’s cylinders. Thick wheel loader lift-arm plates provide strength without sacrificing visibility, and the plates, chassis and joints have been analysed using finite element techniques to confirm the components’ durability.
