BCE’s new flexible friend

A new Volvo EW160E wheeled excavator has been delivered to groundworks, building and civil engineering contractors BCE Ltd of Wolverhampton adding a new dimension and a high degree of flexibility to the projects the company undertakes.

BCE Ltd, a family run business, has been associated with Volvo products for over fourteen years when they purchased their first fourteen tonne EC140 crawler excavator. This was followed by three subsequent EC140’s up until just recently when the company decided to opt for the larger 16 tonne machine - but this time on wheels. “Opting for the EW160E has given us the opportunity to diversify our activities in a whole range of applications and the combination of the wheeled machine together with the Engcon tiltrotator has given us an added dimension and a high degree of flexibility,” says Craig Bell. “So far I’ve been really impressed with the overall performance and stability of the machine and the cab comfort is second to none on the market in my opinion,” he continues.

Specifically for BCE Ltd the machine has been equipped with an array of optional extras including super single wheel and tyre assemblies, a two piece boom and 2.6m dipper arm, boxing ring style handrails for the superstructure, a trailer hitch mounted on the rear stabiliser frame, additional work lights, vandal guards and an anti-theft device. Finally BCE has added an Engcon tiltrotator together with a grading beam, plate compactor, ripper tooth, hydraulically adjustable pallet forks and five buckets of varying capacities.

“Another good reason for us choosing Volvo again is the fact we have enjoyed a good relationship and appreciate dealing directly with the manufacturer. The level and standard of support we receive from them has been excellent,” continues Mr Bell.

Powered by a six cylinder Volvo engine developing 152 nett hp the EW160E offers the latest in engine technology and operating sophistication. For example pump flow is controlled for combined digging and swinging operations to reduce the flow loss through the overload relief valves, whilst maintaining digging power and maximum swing torque. When Eco mode is selected the machine provides better fuel efficiency without loss of performance in most operating conditions.

The Volvo Care Cab offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent all round visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14 vent, climate control system. An adjustable easy to read LCD colour monitor provides real time information of the machine functions, important diagnostic information and a wide variety of work tool settings. The monitor also doubles as a monitor for the rear view camera.
