Mecom invests in versatility with Terex Finlay 683 Screen
Mecom (Mechanisation Company Limited) in Port Louis, Mauritius, has acquired a tracked Terex Finlay 683 Supertrak 3 way split screening plant from Johannesburg-based crushing and screening specialist, Pilot Crushtec.
The business — which deals in the importation and distribution of equipment for the agriculture, construction, civil, manufacturing and handling industries in Mauritius — won a contract to screen boiler coal and immediately turned to long-standing partner Pilot Crushtec for product advice.
The guidance offered has seen the company buy a Terex Finlay screen that not only excels in its intended application, but has the versatility to be fully employed on an almost continual basis.
According to Pilot Crushtec export sales manager Paul Chappel, the original request was for a unit capable of screening 0-60mm coal imported from South Africa and China to the required range of 0 to 6mm, 6 to 30mm and 30 to 60mm.
"We recommended they use a Terex Finlay 683 screen which is perfectly suited to this specific task and has the versatility to be employed in a host of other applications. This means that it will be a cost effective purchase as it will not be standing idle awaiting fresh shipments of coal," says Chappel.
The Terex Finlay 683 began operation in July and Mecom is delighted with the results, especially as it has opened up a swathe of screening opportunities in addition to serving its original purpose.
"The screen is doing a perfect and precise job and totally meets our expectations," says Mecom managing director Luc Bax de Keating, adding that it is currently delivering processed product at the required rate of 24 cubic metres per hour.
In addition to screening coal, the Terex Finlay is now being used to process urea fertiliser. It separates three sizes of material, 0 to 2mm which is then mixed with liquid fertiliser, 2-6mm which is mixed with granular fertiliser, and ±6mm for crushing. Present output ranges between 20 and 30 tonnes per hour.
"We had been looking for a versatile screening unit and now we have found it," says de Keating. He adds that while the Terex Finlay 683 is currently working continuously, Mecom has plans to develop its use still further, possibly in the sugar cane industry.
The Terex Finlay 683 has earned an enviable reputation for its quality, performance and productivity, combining the functions of scalping, screening and stockpiling into one self- contained unit. Its design enables it to handle materials as diverse as sand and gravel, limestone, crushed stone, coal, fertiliser and organic materials.
"As Mecom has shown, the Terex Finlay 683 represents a genuinely cost effective investment in versatility," concludes Chappel.
