With anaerobic digestion (AD) growing at such a rapid rate – UK plants have doubled since Defra launched its Anaerobic Digestion Strategy and Action Plan in 2011 (now 110) – AD is well represented at this year’s RWM 2013 in partnership with CIWM. Some of the fastest growing AD companies (including Tamar Energy and Biogen) will be exhibiting, and the latest technological developments will be discussed at RWM, Europe’s premier recycling and waste management event (an i2i Event).

Tamar Energy celebrates its first network milestone at its inaugural RWM exhibition and conference. Of particular interest to RWM visitors will be Tamar Energy’s new plants at Holbeach Hurn in Lincolnshire, Farleigh and Retford, which are likely to commence commissioning activities in October 2013. Two of the sites will begin to supply electricity to the national grid before the end of 2013. Recent work at the sites has included the construction of the reception buildings, hydrostatic testing of the tanks and installation of pipe work.   Initial feedstock will be delivered to the plants in November 2013 for use in the commissioning process and Tamar Energy is currently in final discussions over feedstock schedules with a number of waste contractors and local businesses.

Work is forging ahead at Biogen’s new Bygrave green energy plant in Hertfordshire. The 45,000 tonne per year AD plant, which has been designed and built by Biogen, will generate renewable energy from food waste and is on schedule for completion in the last quarter of 2014.   The AD plant will process food waste from food manufacturers, supermarkets and households to generate electricity for the national grid and a nutrient-rich fertiliser for use on nearby farmland. The plant will produce sufficient electricity to power around 4,000 homes - approximately the same number of households in nearby Baldock.

Simon Musther, Head of Commercial Operations said, “BIOGEN’S network of plants is growing apace. By the end of 2014 BIOGEN will have nearly 200,000 tonnes of processing capacity, meaning more options for new customers and significantly, renewable power for 18,000 homes.”

Other AD related exhibitors at the show include BTA International (Hall/Stand: 06Q22), Axpo Kompogas (Hall/Stand: 20J39-H38), Haarslev UK (Hall/Stand: 18M35-L34), Imtech (Hall/Stand: 20L69), MWH (Hall/Stand: 20J38) and PRM Waste Systems (Hall/Stand: 18L49-K48). In addition to QSP Limited (Hall/Stand: 20K58), SEaB Energy (Hall/Stand: 06Q40), The TEG Group (Hall/Stand: 19W09) and Tong Peal Engineering (Hall/Stand: 17D12).

For professionals with a broader sustainability role, visitors to RWM in partnership with CIWM 2013 can also attend the three co-located complementary (and free) events – The Energy Event, The Renewables Event and The (new) Water Event.
