Cumbria Waste Group increase recycling capacity with Middleton Engineering baler

Cumbria Waste Group has taken delivery of a 100 tonne channel baler and chain conveyor solution from Middleton Engineering to improve capacity and throughput at its new materials recycling facility (MRF) in Distington.

The solution includes a modified Presona LP100 channel baler with pre-press, re-manufactured by Middletons to ‘as new’ condition and capable of delivering a throughput of 30 tonnes per hour, together with a heavy duty feed conveyor.

Modifications designed by Middletons incorporate a shear blade to enable Cumbria Waste to deal with extra-large sheets of card in addition to normal waste streams. This includes recyclable waste from medium to large commercial customers, kerbside collections, a network of 14 household recycling centres across Cumbria and Recycle Point collections. The new solution will produce highly compact bales of waste materials to be sold on to reprocessing sites.

Charles Riddell, director, Cumbria Waste Management Group explains: “Middletons took the time to understand and resolve our requirements and proposed an economical solution that would satisfy our growing recycling operation. As well as incorporating the modifications we needed to deal with varied waste streams, they provided us with great service, including accurate floor layouts so that civil works could be carried out prior to installation and commissioning.

He added: “Reinvesting in improved machinery allows us to continue to offer an excellent service to increase and encourage recycling across Cumbria.”

As part of the contract Middletons provided free site visits to assess needs, and overcame a challenging site layout, accommodating different floor levels between the feed conveyor and the baler. An ongoing fully comprehensive service contract between Middleton Engineering and Cumbria Waste Group provides additional peace of mind to minimise unwanted downtime.
