Powerscreen Shredders Play Important Role in Secondary Waste Treatment and Volume Reduction

F. D. Todd & Sons Limited is a family run independent company with three waste recovery plants in North Yorkshire - York, Thirsk and Knapton near Malton, where the company also operates a non-hazardous landfill. Richard Todd and his younger brother Peter are Managing Director and Project Director respectively and are the fourth generation of the family to run the business. Since its inception 107 years ago, when F. D. Todd (Richard and Peter's Great-Grandfather) started a quarrying and road building company, the organisation has developed and evolved, building successfully on its long and illustrious history. Now Todd is one of the largest independent waste treatment specialists in Yorkshire, running a large fleet of skip and trade waste trucks, roll-on-off vehicles, compactors, crushing, screening, shredding and washing plants. Collecting from a broad customer base throughout the area, Todd's processes and recycles some 100,000 tonnes of industrial, municipal, commercial and demolition waste every year, including the recovery of paper, card, plastic glass, timber, compostable waste and dirty plastics through an in house washing system. F. D. Todd & Sons still has a quarrying operation at Knapton which produces a range of aggregates and stone for road construction, building, concrete production and civil engineering.
"Treating waste is now our core business" says Richard Todd. "We specialise in front-end recycling through to final disposal, extracting and reclaiming the maximum weight and value from co-mingled wastes. From the two main separate waste streams that we handle, construction and commercial, we draw off the recyclable fractions and thereafter shred the residual wastes for weigh and volume reduction. Through the use of the Powershredders we are finding that the weight and volume reduction of the residual wastes has reduced by up to 40%, leading to significant savings on transport and final disposal costs. Another use for our shredders" Richard continues, "is for the re-processing of landfill void and ensuring the stabilisation of wastes prior to final disposal. This innovative process is serving to prolong landfill life and assist with regulatory compliance.
The Powerscreen Powershredder 1800
Designed and built for heavy-duty volume and size waste reduction tasks, the Powershredder 1800 has a high output performance that belies its compact dimensions and mobility. Featuring a number of different tools and shaft configurations, it can process household, industrial, construction & demolition and green waste, timber, plastics and light metals. The Powershredder 1800 is easily transportable and, once on site, is very quick to set up at any of the Todd sites.
The Powershredder 1800 produces a consistent and uniform material sizing with a range of knives, hooks and combs to match. Operationally, the machine is quiet, has a low dust emission level and is compact enough for the most restricted of sites. Automatic and fixed reverse shafts that are easy to replace makes for easy maintenance and efficient processing of materials. A generously proportioned low loading and tipping hopper allows the shredder to be fed easily by the Liebherr R 932 excavator owned by Todd. The hydraulically raised discharge conveyor, with chevron belting, has a discharge height of some 3 metres for good stockpiling capacity, loading directly into tippers or direct feed into the secondary separating processor such as the Warrior 1400 screening plant. Additionally, full remote control is available for safe operating distance.
The Powerscreen Warrior 1400
One of the most flexible screening machines on the market today, the Warrior 1400 has a highly aggressive screenbox and Todd's machine is equipped with finger screens which are best suited to the materials being processed. Woven mesh and punch plate on both top and bottom decks are also available - the top deck only can also operate with Bofor bar. Screen angles are hydraulically adjustable and the bottom deck is self-cleaning; screens can be easily accessed for changing or maintenance.
The large hopper - with Hardox steel sides and an hydraulically folding rear door has a generous capacity and the variable speed incline feeder belt is equipped with impact bars, discharging onto the screenbox from above in order to eliminate bridging.
All the stockpiling conveyors are oversize, hydraulically folding and angle adjustable. The mid-size material falls directly on to the mid-product conveyor, which also features a special "slide-up" system that allows easy access to the bottom deck meshes for cleaning, overhaul or replacement.
Richard and Peter Todd have had a long and fruitful working partnership with Blue Machinery Scotland. "They are efficient and experts at what they do and we are particularly impressed with these Powerscreen shredders, which are proving to be productive and reliable additions to our fleet of waste processing plants. They follow the Warrior screener around working in tandem and this combination is certainly proving successful and cost-effective".
