Caterpillar® Malaga Demonstration Centre

Sustainable Development Work Recognized by Dow Jones Sustainability World Index

The machine fleet at the Caterpillar Malaga Demonstration and Learning Center will begin to use B20 (biodiesel 20) with the benefit of reducing greenhouse gas emissions as well as carbon monoxide and particulate matter by up to 20 percent. B20 is composed of 80 percent petroleum diesel mixed with 20 percent biodiesel derived from vegetable oils.*

With model job sites to show Cat® machines at work and a legendary three-hour full-line demonstration, this 84-hectare facility supports a fleet of 70 machines and 10 large diesel engines that consume approximately 230,000 litres of fuel per annum. By using 46,000 litres of biofuel in 2008, the site will reduce its overall emissions and promote the use of alternate fuel sources.

Richard Garstin, Manager of the Malaga Demonstration and Learning Center comments, "we're leading by example as we receive over 12,000 visitors at Malaga each year and most of them attend a product demonstration. The use of biodiesel is a great opportunity to do our part in leveraging sustainable development business principles and setting a positive example for our customers."

Most Cat machines and diesel engines can use B20, and off-road machines with a Caterpillar C7 engine or larger can use B30.

Dow Jones Sustainability World Index
Caterpillar Inc. was selected as a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for the seventh consecutive year.  Launched in 1999, the DJSI World is the first global index to track the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. The annual review of the DJSI is based on a thorough analysis of corporate economic, environmental and social performance, assessing issues such as corporate governance, risk management, branding, climate change, supply chain standards and labor practices.

This year, Caterpillar saw a five point gain in its total score and received the highest overall score reached by a company in the industrial engineering industry. Each of the Dow's 2,500 companies was invited to take part in the comprehensive assessment, and only 318 companies met the standards for listing on the DJSI World.

Caterpillar, together with its dealers, works to provide sustainable solutions in industries and applications that span the globe. Customers use Cat machines, engines and services to provide access to clean water, reliable energy and needed infrastructure, improving the standard of living around the world.

* Refer to the machine operation and maintenance manual, SEBU6251-10, or contact your local Caterpillar dealer for guidance on using biofuels. Caterpillar is not in a position to evaluate the many variations of biodiesel and the long-term effects on performance, durability or compliance to emissions standards. The use of biodiesel does not affect the Caterpillar warranty for materials and the warranty for workmanship
