State-of-the-art heavy equipment simulators for Crane Operator Training Tools.

Since 1996, Canada-based CMLabs Simulations has been engaged in delivering superior simulation products designed for training needs, with attention paid to both the software and the hardware. The company has devoted significant resources to developing a highly evolved technology platform, called Vortex, which permits realistic, real-time, interactive 3D representation of vehicles in contact with terrain and other objects. This advanced simulation technology has been incorporated into complete, state of the art heavy equipment simulators offered by CMLabs‟ division for Crane Operator Training Tools.

Simulation has been used by the aerospace and defence industry for over sixty years to train pilots and maintenance technicians of aircraft, armoured, vehicles, ships and support equipment. However, only recently has commercial industry begun to recognize the value of simulation as a complement to existing classroom and on-the-job training. Today there is great interest in expanding the use of simulation in driver training, ocean industries, the oil and mining industries and many other industrial segments. Vortex Crane Operator Training offers the most realistic training simulators available to the construction industry. Mike Gallagher, Business Manager of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 793 describes Vortex Crane Operator Training's tools as, "the most advanced simulators in the world for training crane operators". CMLabs "Crane Operator Training Simulators‟ have been validated by one of North America's most respected operator training institutions, the Operating Engineers Training Institute of Ontario (OETIO). OETIO has been using the simulators over the past three years to train new apprentices and refine the skills of experienced operators with great success. Clubs "Crane Operator Training simulators‟ enables organizations to more effectively utilize their assets, improve safety, assess and maintain skilled operators, and conform to emerging standards for certification. Clients dedicate more of their real crane assets to revenue-generating activities. New operators are assessed and initially trained on a Vortex Crane Operator Training simulator before moving to higher cost assets. Cranes can be more effectively used by students already familiar with operations and procedures. Gerry Hughes, Director, OETIO stated, "the opportunity to train in an effective simulation significantly increases the hours of hands-on experience our students acquire in a safe, controlled, realistic, and responsive environment."

Both new and experienced operators can benefit from dangerous situation training while not risking real crane assets. Vortex Crane Operator Training simulators are ideal for creating simulated environments with a high degree of realism that can be used to expose operators to rare and unsafe situations and to train for emergency procedures. Exercises developed and used on the Vortex Crane Operator Training simulators can incorporate student measurement and assessment capabilities that are repeatable. Operator performance can be compared over time and assessed against operational needs and certification requirements in an objective manner. As new standards and certifications for crane operator performance emerge, Vortex Crane Operator Training simulators can be employed to ensure that students and operators are trained to the latest requirements. An effective balance between simulator time and real-equipment operation time ensures that operator skill-sets are maintained to standards throughout the range of construction cycles. Because not all organisations are at the same level of readiness or have the same needs, Vortex Crane Operator Training offers a modular and reconfigurable solution that supports training on multiple crane types. A Tier I and Tier II option is available. The Tier I is an Immersive Virtual Reality experience with an Operator Focus. Trainees experience virtually everything one will face on the actual job, whether it is as an apprentice learning the trade or as a seasoned operator upgrading skills set. It is configured with four large plasma monitors, plus instructor station. Multiple person views, exercises, scenarios and environments.

Also offered are "Train the Trainer‟ courses and an Annual Upgrade and Support programme. Tier II is Operations Focused, targeting operator and situation controls. Trainees experience situations one may face on the actual job, while training on narrow parts of the job such as controls (foot pedals and joysticks). It is configured with one large plasma monitor, plus instructor station and has basic first-person views, exercises, scenarios and environments. The Tier II offering has a Train the Trainer option and an Annual Upgrade and Support programme.

CMLabs ‟ Crane Operator Training Simulators‟ are designed using the latest computing technology, benefiting from 10 years of CMLabs experience in the simulation industry. The included scenarios and pedagogy have over 3 years of validation and review at OETIO that ensures high levels of capability, reliability, ease of maintenance and upgradeability. By more effective use of training assets, organizations will be able to increase training throughput by at least 3:1 while enhancing training quality. A downloadable demo and other supporting documentation are available.
