Skako Comessa provides more capacity for Tarmac at Arcow Quarry.

- 10th December 2007
- Quarrying
Owned and operated by Tarmac Northern Arcow quarry is situated in Horton in Ribblesdale and has substantial gritstone deposits.
Experiencing acute capacity problems the original aged 600mm wide vibratory feeders were positioned within a very restricted space. Their duty was to deliver four screened gritstone sizes from 6-20mm up to a lorry load discharge point, via belt conveyors. However, with maximum individual discharge rates limited a bottleneck was created, resulting in trucks queuing to be loaded.
Skako Comessa were tasked to design and supply four replacement feeders to fit within the same restricted space, but capable of delivering a minimum of 200tph providing an increase in throughput.
Skako not only accepted the challenge, but custom designed feeders which could be simply installed by only drilling new holes in the existing steel members.
Each new feeder has tray dimensions of 600 mm wide x 1100 mm long, identical to the old units. Drive is supplied by twin 0.7 kW unbalanced vibrator motors mounted over the tray, allowing sufficient clearances under the feeder to the conveyor. It also allows easy access to the drive motors and tray for routine maintenance, including replacement of the wear resistant Hardox 400 liner plates.
Additionally, Skako designed a special integral inlet hopper assembly, with manual bed depth regulation gate, spring suspension arrangements, and drilled flanges to mate with the existing plant steelwork.
With these custom designed, identical sized feeders, the customer is delighted to report capacities well in excess of 200tph, representing a substantial increase in output production.
Michael Jones - Quarry Manager, commented " The Skako feeders have assisted in allowing us to fully realise the required plant throughput."
