Radio Controlled Swivel Chute Improves Safety for Hanson Heidelberg – Bulls Lodge Quarry.

Radio Controlled Swivel Chute Improves Safety for Hanson Heidelberg – Bulls Lodge Quarry.
The first recipient of the new Linatex radio controlled swivel chute has been at Bulls Lodge Quarry. Owned and operated by Hanson Aggregates, Bulls Lodge is situated at Boreham, near Chelmsford in Essex and has substantial sand and gravel deposits.

The quarry operates a fixed 400 tph aggregate washing plant including a Linatex sand plant. The plant processes 950ktonnes/annum, material being supplied primarily to Hanson Premix plants, bagging plant, asphalt plant and various building contracting companies in the South East.

The new 12VDC unit which has been installed is completely self contained and is designed to derive its total energy requirement from the wind. The installation of this product has provided a safer working environment at Bulls Lodge by eliminating the need for plant operatives to routinely climb ladders on a daily basis and traverse high walkways to access stock piling chutes.

Retrofit at Bulls Lodge has been a straight forward process - all the system components bar the radio control handset being installed at chute level within the tower. No requirement for an external power supply or hard wiring to the ground being necessary.  Once installed and powered up, the unit awaits instruction from the remote control handset, drawing minimal power from the battery which is itself continuously topped up by the wind turbine charger.

The intermittent power required by the chute's drive train is delivered by the tower mounted battery, and as long as excessive operation of the chute's drive unit is avoided the installation will provide plentiful power for reliable operation.

Beyond monitoring battery condition and occasionally greasing the chute's bearings the unit is considered essentially maintenance free.

Bulls Lodge has found the new radio controlled swivel chute to be extremely beneficial. Chris Dunn - Unit Manager, commented, "We are very pleased with this installation, it reduces the need to climb the tower each day, from a health and safety aspect it is first class."
