Concrete paving market now approaching 30 million square metres

The concrete paving market has been increasing in recent years and is now estimated at over 27 million square metres. Slab producers have been adept at developing smaller elemental paving and increasing the number of finishes. Rumbled paving is especially popular. The growth in the market is despite the increased use of imported natural stone paving.

These are some of the conclusions of a new report published by BDS Marketing Research Ltd on the estimated outputs of paving slab works and companies. The consultancy has identified 64 companies in this sector, operating 92 works in Great Britain.

Marshalls is thought be the market leader, with over 35% of the market. Aggregate Industries is the second largest company, with a share approaching 25%. No other company is thought to have more than 10% of the market. Other leading players are BS Eaton, Castacrete and Brett.

This report on the paving slab industry has been published at the same time as a similar study of the concrete kerbs market. The total production in this sector is now over 13 million linear metres. Manufacturers have had a difficult few years in recent times, with the Government cutting back expenditure on new road construction and maintenance.

Marshalls and Aggregate Industries are also leading players in this sector. In total, BDS Marketing identified 36 kerb works operated by 21 companies.
