Skako Comessa provides new feed for Meldon Quarry.
Situated near Okehampton in Devon, Meldon Quarry is operated by Bardon Aggregates, a division of Aggregate Industries. Meldon Quarry features substantial deposits of an igneous/metamorphic material which is a relatively tough and abrasive material.

The quarry currently operates a fixed processing plant featuring a D440 Single Toggle Jaw Crusher processing material at the rate of 300,000 tonnes per annum. The material is processed to focus on rail ballast for Network Rail and the by product is also supplied to the construction industry

Recently faced with the prospect of replacing an old damaged feeder grizzly they contacted Skako Comessa with a view to them supplying a replacement.

Based on their existing design philosophy which features a stress free construction Skako Comessa designed and manufactured a custom designed unit to fit into the existing primary crushing station. A new dump hopper was also designed and constructed by a local company - Centristic.

The new heavy-duty feeder supplied to Meldon is 1100mm wide x 4750mm long and features a tapered grizzly bar scalping section. Comprising of 3 x 600mm sections incorporating fall steps, these provide efficient undersize removal of the natural minus 100mm.

Designed to operate at up to 500tph the new feeder currently works around 300tph, handling an abrasive Hornfells material with lumps up to 900-1000mm

The main features of the feeder are its robustness coupled with low and easy maintenance requirements. The feeder grizzly has a complete heavy-duty compression fit and "huck" bolted construction therefore eliminating any weld stresses. With all contact parts from replaceable Hardox 400 plate the body is designed to accept the maximum sized raw material being fed from a 5m height.

Drive is provided by a synchronous mechanized geared exciter with direct drive from a 30kw standard 6 pole industrial motor. Providing the required oscillation the exciter consists of two precision counterweighted shafts, mechanically synchronized by high precision helical gears which run in a shallow oil bath, all supported by cylindrical roller bearings. The exciter is a self contained monobloc unit which bolts directly to the feeder which only requires an oil change at 1,000 intervals. When maintenance is finally required the exciter box can be easily removed from the feeder without the need for a major strip-down. The replacement box can normally be fitted in less than two hours.

Powered by a standard industrial electric motor the feed rate can be varied from approximately 30-100% via an electrical frequency inverter.

Alan Evans - Quarry Manager, commented, "Skako Comessa and Centristic Engineering worked well together on the design of this installation and the project went to plan; the Skako feeder has proved to be a very robust piece of kit and easily capable of delivering sufficient tonnage to the crusher in all conditions.  Operators at the quarry have been very impressed with its performance and ease of operation."
