CDE Filter Press ImPRESSes at Hillhead 07

- 19th July 2007
- Quarrying
CDE, who specialise in the design and manufacture of tailor made aggregate processing and materials handling equipment exhibited some of their latest plant innovations including the new Eco-Hopper, the new B-series range of Dual Sand Plant, currently taking Ireland by storm, and the latest Logwasher in the CDE Rotomax range, the 132/8, described by some show goers as a "beast among men". Completing the CDE display was the Overhead Beam Filter Press from the popular CDE / Diemme range. Over the course of the three day show CDE reported that the piece of equipment generating the most interest was the Overhead Beam Filter Press.
The CDE / Diemme GHT Overhead Beam Filter Press is commonly used in the quarrying and construction demolition waste recycling industries in order to treat waste water generated during the washing process. Before arriving at the Filter Press the waste water is treated in a CDE High-Rate Thickener which, using a small amount of chemical flocculent thickens the waste material, recycling water for re-use in the washing process and reducing the waste volume by 10-14 times. This offers a high solids-content sludge of approximately 40% solids. The sludge is then sent to the Overhead Beam Filter Press, where the material is squeezed between plates to achieve maximum water recycling. The press is commonly mounted on concrete walls with a bay below for the final Filter Cake to drop in to. The final output will be an easily handled dry Filter Cake of approximately 80% solids.
What sets the GHT Overhead Beam Filter Press aside from other models available is its unique 4x4 heavy-duty design. Filter Presses have traditionally been a side-bar design with the plates mounted on horizontal beams to either side of the plate. The plates are then pushed together by one hydraulic cylinder positioned through the middle of the plate pack. Commonly with this design sludge will build up in the corners of the plates and cause deformation during plate compaction. Plate inspection and maintenance is also a problem issue with the side bar, with the horizontal beams severely restricting access. CDE no longer offer this type of Filter Press for quarrying and construction and demolition waste recycling applications.
The CDE / Diemme GHT Overhead Beam range was designed specifically to address the issues found with the Side Beam Press. The 4x4 design sees 4 hydraulic rams placed on the plate pack corners exert equal pressure to all areas of the plate .
This, combined with the fully automatic cloth washing system ensures that there is no deformation due to dirty cloths. With this design the plates are hung from the upper beam and moved automatically by a rapid shifting device equipped with a carousel system which reduces the Filter Press opening and closing sequence to a minimum. To ensure that inspection and maintenance can be carried out unrestricted a laser system has been implemented which detects when an object is close to the plate pack and halts the press operation. This removes the need for guards and barriers and was Highly Commended at the Designing for Safety Awards from the Institute of Quarrying, which were showcased at Hillhead 2007.
The heavy duty design of the GHT Overhead Beam Filter Press makes it capable of 24 hour un-supervised automatic operation. The unique CDE / Diemme design also ensures that no chemical or lime is required to be added, substantially reducing operator overheads. The final filter cake is approximately 80% solids content and is therefore easily picked up and removed. In many cases were a CDE / Diemme Overhead Beam Press has been used the end Filter cake has had a commercial value. Often being used for capping of landfill sites, in some cases cakes can also be used in concrete production. The water that is recycled by the Filter Press is re-circulated back around the washing system, reducing water requirements to typically less than 10% and removing completely the need for a hazardous pond system, freeing up valuable site space and providing a much more positive human and environmental impact.
The CDE / Diemme Filter Press range includes various sizes to cover all applications and tonnage requirements.
