Teams were challenged with reaching the summit of the UK's highest mountains - Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands, Scafell Pike in the Lake District, and Snowdon in North Wales - all within 24 hours! Seeing the potential to help many less fortunate people, Extec sought six intrepid volunteers to take part in this incredible event. After many weeks of cajoling, bribing and bullying the eventual team was made of: Holly Chaplin (capt), Kimberley Page, Jon Fox, Jon McNulty, Matthew Evans and Dominic Gunton - the driver!
The weekend began for Extec with a crash course on survival thanks to Dominic, the nominated driver, wanting to take part of the scenery with him! Luckily by 16:00 hours on the Saturday afternoon the ascent of Ben Nevis brought the team to life with another shock to the system. Then, without delay, Team Extec was on their way south to Scaffell Pike to take on the largest mountain in England.
Come day break on Sunday the final ascent of Snowdon was looming. The weather in the main held until late afternoon where the heavens opened - ‘raining cats and dogs' would be an understatement. Properly soaked, Team Extec came across the finishing line at 22:00 hours - but all with the widest smiles, and the sorest of feet.
Other participating companies involved in the endeavour came from a wide range of sectors and included Coins Ladies, Lovell Homes, Kier, Mackley Construction, Bluestone Plc and many more. 23 out of the 46 teams made the 24 hour time limit, with the fastest time being made by the Sovereign Group who achieved a time of 20hrs 17 minutes - just shy of the event record time of 20hrs.
It was then with great pleasure Larry Sutherland, Chair of Coins Ltd, was able to announce the event to be another fundraising record breaker. In total £345,000 was pledged by all the teams this year, which took the total for the five years comfortably over the £1 million mark, with a massive total of £1,165,000. Larry stated: "I would like to thank all the teams that took part for their achievement on the mountains and the outstanding fundraising performance that collectively raised over £344,000 for CARE. The money raised will go a long way to helping those who need it most, in the poorest communities around the world, where CARE operates. We would be very happy to report back on how this very valuable money will be spent."
Team Extec was able to raise a brilliant £13,710 for their efforts, coming in at fifth place in the fundraising leagues. A big thank you is deserved for everyone who helped to achieve this total as much as the team themselves by allowing the less fortunate around the world to benefit. Particular thanks should be given to all of the companies who sponsored Team Extec:
