Middlesbrough's green credentials have received a fresh boost with the town becoming the regional 'hub' for composting.
Local charity Middlesbrough Environment City has won the contract to deliver training, advice and support services to local organisations, groups and companies who wish to develop composting facilities at their own sites.
The scheme was set up by the Community Composting Network with funding from the Local Food programme and is part of a plan to establish 'hubs' throughout England which will work together to become the country's leading provider of composting support.
Free training courses will run in the coming months, supported by on-site advice visits and loans of composting machinery and equipment.
Follow-up training on and off site will be offered to complete the training package.
Middlesbrough's composting 'hub' will be based at MEC's Town Farm training centre and will become a centre of excellence and a point of contact for the local composting community.
