Lokotrack Central Provides Solution on “Nightmare Site”
An East Anglian recycling contractor has followed the advice of Lokotrack Central and invested in an LT95 to tackle the processing of a variety of materials at a "nightmare" brownfield housing development in Norfolk.

Lokotrack Central, third-party distributor for a range of Metso Minerals track-mounted mobile crushers and screens, has supplied a 30 tonne LT95 to long-term customer Philpott Demolition & Recycling Ltd.   The Norfolk based contractor, which has been dealing with Central for more than 10 years, is using its new Metso Minerals unit to process a wide variety of "waste" materials at a brownfield housing development seven kilometres West of Norwich.

Fast-Expanding Company
Founded in 1980 by managing director Tim Philpott, Philpotts Limited has enjoyed almost three decades of continuous growth.   Company records show that its single employee achieved a turnover of just £17,500 during its first year of operation.   Twenty seven years later, the company employs 40 members of staff, has a turnover in excess of £2.5 million, and is widely regarded as one of the leading crushing and recycling contractors in East Anglia.

The company is currently working with fellow East Anglian contractor May Gurney, together with a consortium of four house builders - Wimpey, Bovis, Bloors and Cofton on the development of 1,800 houses on a 100 hectare, former factory site.

"One of the key challenges facing us on this site is that one of the factories produced reinforced concrete products such as concrete posts," explains Tim Philpott.   "We knew in advance that any equipment going onto this site would have to be tough, durable and able to withstand some seriously hard work."

Extended Contract
Philpott reports that his company has been on the site in Costessy for two years and expects to be there for at least another year.   Against this background, the company has been able to establish a highly-sophisticated crushing and recycling process.

Material is initially screened to remove topsoil, clay and waste products; and reinforced concrete products are initially broken by a concrete pulverisor mounted on a Volvo EC210BLC excavator to remove reinforcing steel.   The resulting products from these two processes are then handled by the Metso Minerals LT95.

Nightmare Site
Despite the efficiency of its recycling process, Philpott describes the project as a "nightmare site".   "We are dealing with a lot of infill material that contains a large proportion of clay which really slows down production," he says.   "During periods when we've been dealing with clean input material, we have achieved production level of 100 tonnes/hour; but when there's clay in the mix, that can fall to as little as 30 tonnes/hour"

Philpott believes, however, that his purchasing decision is justified by the quality of product that the Metso machine delivers.   "The Metso Minerals LT95 is currently producing Type 1 base material of 40 - 75 mm and the quality and consistency is excellent," he asserts.   "This material is being used for road bases and foundations on the site, reducing the amount of material being sent to landfill and reducing vehicle movements on and off the site."

Central Recommendation
"I bought the LT95 on the recommendation of Lokotrack Central.   I have been working with them for years and I have come to trust their opinion," Tim Philpott concludes.   "When they told me they were changing dealerships and taking on the Metso Minerals product line, our attitude was ‘if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for us' and we were keen to try out the LT95.   We haven't been disappointed.   Although we have put it on a nightmare site, it has dealt with everything we've thrown at it."
