Powerscreen Warrior Processes Excavated Material From Liverpool City Site
The city of Liverpool is a hive of construction activity and, next year, takes on the enviable mantle of "City of Culture". Grundy & Co. Excavations of Widnes is heavily involved in the major construction work going on and is currently fulfilling a groundworks contract for Livesey Group on their city centre site in Duke Street. Here, the creation of a basement pit for an apartment block with underground parking is well under way for the main contractors. Grundy is excavating down to around 6 metres to produce a basement area of approximately 30m X 35m to house the car park. Over 3,000 tonnes of sandstone found at around 3 metres depth and old foundations from the recently demolished building that once stood on this site is being dug out by Grundy's excavators, loaded onto their fleet of tippers and removed to their recycling station in nearby Widnes. To maximise reclamation of saleable materials from the excavations, Grundy has recently added a third Powerscreen mobile screening plant to their fleet from distributors Blue Machinery Plc and this is hard at work screening, separating and stockpiling the raw waste materials from the Duke Street site.

Grundy & Co Excavations runs a mixed fleet of excavators from 20 to 35 tonnes operating weight, wheeled loaders, bulldozers and tippers. Recycling plant includes three Powerscreen flat-bed dry screeners, with a static trommel and crushing plant completing the eclectic mix. The company specialises in bulk earthmoving, screening, crushing and recycling from their Widnes headquarters, supplying a range of recycled aggregates to building and civil engineering contractors throughout North West England. Over the past ten years, Grundy & Co has always sourced its screening plant from Blue Machinery in Warrington and continues this synergistic business partnership with their new Warrior 1400.

Grundy's Sean Parry says "We're reclaiming upwards of 70% of saleable material from the Liverpool contract, only sending clay and some subsoil to landfill. Our new Warrior 1400 has a three-way split, producing -20mm for filler material, 20-50mm sold on as 6F2 and the 50mm+ going on for crushing to specified size". Due to the old foundations being excavated at Duke Street, a certain amount of tramp metal is being encountered - predominantly rebar - which separates with the oversize, the Warrior 1400 being equipped a finger screen top deck.

The Powerscreen Warrior 1400 is an ideal screening plant for recycling applications - especially when screening and separating comingled C&D waste and oversize materials such as large boulders or tree stumps. The Warrior has a highly aggressive screenbox with hydraulically adjustable screen angles. The bottom deck features a speedharp, or self-cleaning ball deck system, and bottom screens can be easily accessed for changing and maintenance.

The large hopper - with Hardox steel sides and an hydraulically folding rear door to accommodate direct feed from a crusher working in tandem - has a generous capacity and the variable speed incline feeder belt is equipped with impact bars, discharging onto the screenbox from above in order to eliminate bridging.

All the stockpiling conveyors are oversize, hydraulically folding and angle adjustable. The mid-size material falls directly on to the mid-product conveyor, which also features a special "slide-up" system that allows easy access to the bottom deck meshes for cleaning, overhaul or replacement. An overband magnet for extracting metals during screening is an optional extra.
