Bell Equipment not only manufactures the largest range of Articulated Dump Trucks (ADTs) in the world, but the South African ADT specialist is also the owner of a specialised product programme, known as the 'Bell Versa Truck', which offers tailor made OEM solutions including niche models and more than a hundred and fifty basic variations of the traditional Bell ADT.
Trevor Musliah, the company's Product Marketing Manager: ADTs, says: "Bell Equipment was built on the specialised machinery concept. In the 1950s our founder, Irvine Bell offered specialised machines to meet the needs of the sugar industry and in the same way our engineering team has always worked to meet customer requirements, no matter how impossible they may seem to be.
"We believe we take versatility to a whole different level with our Versa Truck programme because customers are able to choose from a number of permutations to best suit their application requirements. They can select any Bell ADT model from the B25D through to the B50D and also including the smaller B18D. They also have the choice of using the standard cab or a low profile cab as the powerhead and there are currently six different options for the rear chassis – the standard chassis, an extended chassis, a 4x4 hauler chassis, a 4x4 short chassis, a standard chassis with crane mounting and an extended chassis with crane mounting.
Included in Bell's extensive list of tailor made solutions are fire trucks, water tankers, lube trucks, flat deck trucks, hooklift trucks, container trucks, concrete trucks, timber trucks, waste handlers, waste compactors and even an underground concrete mixer, which was built for an Australian customer.
Says Musliah: "Most of the truck is built through the normal production facility and the specialised components are manufactured on our research and development line to ensure that we remain cost competitive. Of course the Versa Trucks, like our D-series ADTs, are able to offer the best in performance, safety, fuel efficiency and ease of operation. They also have all the latest innovations and features of our D-series ADTs, among them onboard weighing, keyless ignition, HillAssist, Bin Tip Prevention, Auto Park Application (APA), standard Turbo Spin Protection and our satellite fleet management system Fleetm@tic."
While customers also have the option of buying a cab and chassis of their choice and having a third-party design and manufacture the additional modifications, Musliah explains that the advantages of the Bell Versa Truck programme is that Bell Equipment, as an OEM, builds the main chassis as well as the additional component required by the customer, so that the finished product enjoys full factory support. "Wherever in the world a customer takes a Bell Versa Truck solution they can be guaranteed of Bell Equipment's technical support offered through our comprehensive network of customer service centres and dealers," he adds.
