Central Service Seals the Deal on LT Crusher

Central Service Seals the Deal on LT Crusher
A Kent-based contractor with a fast-expanding recycling division has purchased an LT1110 track-mounted mobile crusher from newly-appointed England and Wales distributor Lokotrack Central.   KKB Regeneration's decision to purchase its first LT machine was based upon its experience of Lokotrack Central's aftersales service and parts support

Lokotrack Central, third-party distributor for a range of Metso Minerals track-mounted mobile crushers and screens, has delivered a new LT1110 track-mounted mobile crusher to KKB Regeneration, the rapidly expanding environmental division of Rochester-based KKB Group.

The 33.5 tonne machine, that features a proven Nordberg impact crusher, becomes the first Metso Minerals unit to join a KKB fleet that already comprises five competitive crushers.   The unit has been put immediately to work recycling and processing demolition waste at a Hanson Aggregates facility in Maidstone, Kent.

Forward-Thinking Company
KKB Group was formed in 1998 and comprises three primary divisions: KKB Plant Hire; RKB Haulage and Aggregates; and KKB Regeneration.   Employing 50 permanent staff, the company has grown rapidly thanks to a forward-thinking attitude, a focus on recycling and the environment, and a significant investment in capital equipment.

"We pride ourselves on providing our customers with a complete solution to their recycling and remediation needs," explains KKB Regeneration managing director Colin Basi.   "During the past 12 months, we have invested approximately £3.5 million in new, non-haulage equipment including 20 Volvo excavators and wheel loaders," Basi says.   "When you're working for the likes of Hanson Aggregates, you need to provide reliable, safe equipment with high capacities and low set-up times.   Only the best equipment will do."

Best Possible Equipment
Basi reports that it was this commitment to buying and supplying the best possible equipment that first led the company to look at the LT1110 crusher.   "We have an ongoing processing contract with Hanson Aggregates to process demolition and asphalt waste at their facility at the 20/20 Estate in Maidstone," Basi says.   "With increases in throughputs at the site, we needed a machine that could match the capacity demands and which was capable of handling a relatively high degree of asphalt content."

Basi explains that asphalt can be extremely difficult to process and it was this that led them to consider an impact crusher.   "Asphalt waste is a horrible material to process," he continues.   "Unlike concrete and brick, asphalt binds together and can easily clog a crusher, slowing or stopping production completely."

Service Excellence
Having been advised to consider an impact crusher by Lokotrack Central, Basi says that he was very impressed by the build quality, ease of operation, and high resale value of the LT1110 unit.

He reports, however, that the company's ultimate decision to purchase the Metso Minerals machine was based at least in part upon the company's experience of Lokotrack Central's aftersales support.

"I have been involved in recycling and construction for more than 15 years and I have never had such good service from a company," he adds.   "I know from experience that if I have a machine failure on a Friday afternoon, they will work all weekend to ensure if possible that it's up and running again for Monday morning.   Their service is second to none in the crusher market."

Half Capacity
The 33.5 tonne track mounted unit was temporarily seconded to an Aggregate Industries facility in Greenwich.   But the machine proved so efficient that the customer ran out of room in which to store the material processed by the LT1110.   Even at its semi-permanent home at Hanson Aggregates, the unit is running in what Basi describes as "cruise mode" because the layout of the facility does not allow material to be moved away from the crusher quickly enough.

Loaded by a Volvo EC240B hydraulic excavator, the 224 kW Metso Minerals machine is currently producing up to 1,000 tonnes/day of material that is a mixture of demolition waste and waste products from Hanson Aggregates' asphalt plant.   "We're running at around half capacity at the moment because the excavator can't load the machine quickly enough and the Cat 966G wheel loader can't keep up with rehandling the crushed product," Basi says.

Despite being forced to run at half speed, Colin Basi is clearly delighted with his new machine, as is Tony Jennings, an experienced operator and the man in day-to-day charge of the LT1110.   "The LT1110 is a really nice machine to use.   It's easy to operate and control," Tony Jennings concludes.  The controls are all hydraulically managed with three operating speeds, three driving speeds and instant rotor response if we need to free an oversized piece of material.   Best of all, it is very easy to manoeuvre around the site, a vital consideration in a relatively compact site."
