NFDC Appoints First Full-Time NVQ Assessor

- 18th February 2007
- Materials Handling
The National Federation of Demolition Contractors, the voice of the UK demolition industry, has underlined its commitment to the National Vocational Qualification scheme by employing its first full-time NVQ Assessor. Roy Brown is a demolition industry veteran boasting almost 30 years experience with some of the leading names in the sector.
Roy Brown has been appointed as the National Federation of Demolition Contractors' first full-time NVQ Assessor. Based at the Federation's self-certified NVQ Centre in Staines, Middlesex and covering the Southern half of England from the Midlands down to Cornwall, Roy brings with him a wealth of on-site experience gained over almost 30 years in the demolition sector.
Learning Curve
The NFDC took the decision to start its own NVQ Centre in 2004 as part of its ongoing commitment to improving levels of training and assessment in the demolition industry. Almost two years later, having completed the rigorous pre-qualification process, the Federation was granted approval to run its own NVQ Centre. Less than six months later, having proved the integrity of its internal auditing system, the Federation was granted self-certification status. The Federation awarded its first NVQ in July 2006. Just a few short months later and the number of employees registered with the NFDC's NVQ Centre has passed the 20 mark and there are plenty more to come. "The establishment of our own NVQ Centre has been a huge learning curve. But thanks to the hard work of our Training & Quality Assurance Co-ordinator Harpreet Bahra and the rest of the team at Resurgam House, we are now able to provide demolition industry employees with full NVQ Assessment capabilities," says National Secretary Howard Button. "The scheme has already proved very successful and we have gone from one qualified person to 20 in a very short space of time. I expect us to have assessed and qualified more than 100 candidates by the end of 2007. We needed a full-time assessor and we're delighted that Roy is now on board."
Giving Something Back
Roy Brown, a lifetime member of the demolition industry, is clearly delighted at his appointment. "I have worked in demolition as a machine operator, site manager and project manager for more than 27 years with companies including EDS, DSM, Cuddy, Able and Wards," he concludes. "The demolition industry has fed and clothed myself and my family my entire working life and I relish the opportunity to give something back."
