Blue Machinery Introduces The New Backhus LT In-vessel Row Turner
UK distributors for the Backhus range of compost and soil turning equipment, Blue Machinery, announces a new range developed specifically for the efficient and cost-effective transposing of in-vessel materials for the production of high quality compost. The new Backhus LT series is already successful on continental Europe - particularly in agriculture where waste sludge, manure and other green waste is continually composted at high temperatures, with Backhus machinery mixing and turning throughout the composting process. There are six versions in the series, which are all designed to fulfil a wide range of vessel configurations and operational requirements, including fully automatic electrically driven and diesel powered operator driven.

The Backhus LT is a completely self-contained unit designed for in-vessel homogenisation and aeration of organic waste and sewage sludge, as well as for bioremediation and mechanical biological treatment of residual waste with no cross-contamination and total traceability of material, maintaining batch system integrity. The Backhus LT is capable of treating a row width of up to 5m and a row height maximum of 2.70m with an optimum row cross section of 13.85m². This performance ensures the consistent and efficient turning of the tanked material during the composting process and, with an infinitely variable hydraulically driven forward and reverse travel speed of up to 50 metres per minute, allows the operator to vary the speed as required for the material being composted.

For the operated diesel powered versions, mainly used on open tunnel systems, the optional 209kW and 242kW outputs from the Cummins water-cooled and turbo-charged engines available provide power to spare, with a sophisticated electronic engine management technology ensuring fuel economy and reduced emissions. The ergonomically designed cab is fully air conditioned with panoramic glazing and the controls and single lever joystick for steering are integrated into the operator's seat armrests. Rubber running gear tracks have the distinct advantage of being able to run on the row walls and are automatically guided. When operating on the ground, the hydraulic drive system allows counter-rotation for the Backhus LT to turn "on the spot".

The electrically powered versions are designed for automatic operation on row walls and are particularly suited to under-cover composting installations. Backhus has designed a transfer wagon (Backhus TW) for quick and easy movement of the machine from one row to the next.

Rotor width can be between 4.4 and 4.9 metres with diameters between 1.2 and 1.8m. The "screw-in" throwing tools are easily and quickly interchangeable. The rotor itself has infinitely variable RPM and is height adjustable under load.

Blue Machinery can supply, install, commission, service and maintain the complete Backhus machine ranges, which also include "free on tracks" compost and soil turners and trapezoidal turning machines. Backhus equipment is compact yet robust, highly productive and a typical example of German engineering excellence, with TUV certification and a quality management system to EN ISO 9001. The production and low maintenance benefits of infinitely variable hydraulic drive, ergonomically designed operators' cabs and true versatility contribute to the success of this leading marque. Numerous models are now at work throughout the UK for waste management companies and municipal authorities in their drive to increase the availability of both the volume and quality of composts.
