Lafarge Takes Liebherr Materials Handlers for New Landfill Site

Lafarge Takes Liebherr Materials Handlers for New Landfill Site

Two Liebherr materials handling machines, specifically designed and built for landfill applications, have been delivered to Lafarge Aggregates Limited at Walleys landfill site, situated to the west of Newcastle-under-Lyme in Staffordshire. The R 914B HDSL Litronic excavator and LR 632B Litronic tracked loading shovel are on site awaiting the opening of the site to waste later this month.

Lafarge Aggregates has been meticulous in the preparation of the Walleys site, which for many years had provided Etruria Marl for the manufacture of high quality bricks. The Company has constructed a 260m haul road to the landfill site and installed leachate and landfill gas collection equipment in the base of each cell. The 23.5 hectare site provides 4.5 million cubic metres capacity for the incoming materials, which will include C&D, commercial and industrial non-hazardous and stable non-reactive hazardous wastes which cannot be recycled. Walleys landfill has an expected life of 20 - 25 years. Phased restoration during this period will see the site restored and landscaped to a contoured profile in keeping with the surrounding countryside, laid to grassland and planted with locally indigenous trees.

The Liebherr specialist machines are the key "workhorses" on site, handling, spreading and compacting the incoming waste, maintaining the general working areas, stockpiling and laying landfill cover material. Both pieces of equipment come with full "landfill kit" and are factory built to this specification - not merely adapted by retrofit. Numerous operational and safety features specific to this kind of application have been supplied at Lafarge's request. Both machines have protective guards, additional working lights, roof beacon, rear-view CCTV camera, white-noise reversing alarm, blue strobe reversing lights, refuelling pump and automatic central lubrication system. Liebherr-Great Britain offers a range of after sales product support programmes and for their new machines and Lafarge has opted for a "bespoke" service and repair scheme.

The R 914B HDSL Litronic Hydraulic Excavator
The Liebherr R 914B HDSL Litronic Hydraulic Excavator is a 25 tonnes class machine powered by a Liebherr engine which develops 112Kw (152HP). Equipped with a 5.70m gooseneck boom and 3m stick, the R 914B has also been supplied with quick-hitch, hydraulic swivel, 1.20m³ backhoe and 0.70m² ditch cleaning buckets. The heavy-duty wide gauge undercarriage (HDSL) provides excellent operational stability and allows the machine to work safely on a wide variety of ground conditions.

The operator's cab is both functional and extremely comfortable. Additional protection consists of a FOPS and front screen guard, with toughened glazing to all windows. Air-conditioning and a fully adjustable, heated and air-suspended seat, with automatic lap safety belt, ensure maximum comfort and safety for the operator, while the Litronic engine and hydraulics management system provides continual read-outs of the machine's performance on the in-cab monitor - also included are an overload warning system and safe-load indicator.

The LR 632B Litronic Tracked Loading Shovel
The fully hydrostatic Liebherr LR 632B Litronic tracked loading shovel is one of the most successful machines of its type in UK waste management operations. It has an operating weight of around 22 tonnes and is powered by a Liebherr engine type D 926 T-E with an output of 132kW (180 HP). The hydrostatic drive has electronic foot pedal steering control and a single joystick lever for travel speed and direction, producing an agility and fuel economy which belie its power and performance.

The factory fitted landfill package includes a number of specialist features to reduce machine and component contamination, with suitable accessories available for matching to the landfill task and materials being handled. For undercarriage protection, the LR 632B has track guards and track-pads with mud relief holes. An automatic reversible fan is fitted, which precludes dust incursion into the cooling system. Superstructure protection includes rear striker bars, radiator guard, perforated engine covers, tank and tilt cylinder guards. The operator's cab is fully air-conditioned and lightly pressurised to prevent dust entering and there is a seal between the cab and the machine's body. The LR 632B Litronic is equipped with a 1.90m³ 4-in-1 bucket, complete with spill guard.
