For over 30 years now, New Holland Construction has been providing support to the development of the Guelpa TP company located at the foot of Mont Blanc. An ongoing relationship that has, over time, turned into a solid partnership between the SME and Etablissements Payant, a New Holland Construction dealer in the Rhone-Alps, Auvergne, Bourgogne, Franche-Comté and Aquitaine regions.
The company, specialised in large-scale earth-moving works, roads and services, civil engineering, quarries and carcase work such as that done for water reservoirs, operates a busy fleet of some 40 pieces of New Holland equipment.
No small coincidence, for, as Laurent Falco, equipment manager at Guelpa Public Works explains:
"We constantly strive to keep our fleet at the head of the pack, because that's what makes for smooth operations on our work site, so New Holland is indeed the leading brand in our fleet because, after all, our equipment conveys the brand image of the company."
And he continues:
"Our loyalty is also a reflection of the unwavering after-sales service that Etablissements Payant has provided for over 30 years."
The fleet has just been rejuvenated with the arrival of a new heavy duty digger. After having invested in an E215B with a triple joint boom, Guelpa TP decided to replace a tracked E385 hydraulic shovel with a new E385B. This acquisition is a clear illustration of the policy of periodic renewal of equipment after five years’ operation.
A production machine
The entrepreneur has always favoured equipment that provides an excellent ratio of product / service / price, and that is clearly reflected in the excellent condition and quality of the equipment in the fleet.
"Guelpa Public Works takes pride in its relentless quest to find the best equipment and technology available," asserts Laurent Falco.
Intended for large-scale earth-moving projects, quarry extraction and rock fill jobs, the New Holland Construction E385B hydraulic shovel displays all the specifications for the task - 38 tonnes and 284 HP of power, yet sensitive to the slightest command of the operator's fingertips.
Meanwhile, Laurent Falco points out that comfort and safety are not optional equipment on the E385B. Indeed, he appreciates the new cabin that complies with the ROPS/FOPS/TOPS standards specially developed for protecting the operator in case of tip over and the control screen dedicated to the rear view camera.
Everyone agrees the new cabin is an ergonomic wonder - the interior now has greater volume, ventilation has been optimised, the new monitor enables easier visualisation of the different parameters of the machine, and movement control is now extremely precise.
Isolation against noise and vibrations has been heavily reinforced in the cabin, with the controls grouped together on the joysticks. This allows the operator to keep his mind on his business, all day long.
At delivery, the Payant agency in La Roche sur Foron is responsible for commissioning and periodic revision of the machine, together with the technical staff at Guelpa TP.
“We know them personally, and we know they've got what it takes to ensure proper daily and periodic maintenance,” said Laurent Legouhy from the Payant Sales Department, Rhone-Alpes area.
Less pollution and lower fuel consumption with AdBlue
This year, Tier IV standards for heavy public works equipment come into effect. Guelpa has been making this technological transition on its trucks subject to similar standards since 2005. These standards have led nearly all truck manufacturers to use AdBlue to satisfy their customers seeking greater fuel economy.
"With AdBlue, fuel consumption on our 6x4 Ivecos dropped by 5 litres per hour. That's 10%. Our staff made the transition to AdBlue quickly and easily. The AdBlue distribution network is highly developed and, despite the fact that we work at up to 2,000 metres, we have not experienced any problems related to freezing during the past few winters.
“The solutions developed by the FIAT group for its Iveco and New Holland brands are quite effective. As one of the leading engine manufacturers worldwide, FIAT can clearly take advantage of its lead for capitalising on its know-how," judges the equipment manager.
Actually, the launch of the E265C and E305C models looks promising, what with increases in fuel economy and productivity of the order of 10% and a corresponding 50% reduction in NOx emissions when compared with the previous generation.
Emissions can quickly become a critical issue on the clean work sites in a conservation area that citizens and contractors alike increasingly demand.
