New incinerator ash conditioning plant for The Waste Recycling Group.

New incinerator ash conditioning plant for The Waste Recycling Group.

Portasilo has successfully completed a major contract for incinerator ash conditioning plant for The Waste Recycling Group (WRG), despite a very tight programme.

Sited at WRG`s waste disposal site at Norwood on the Isle of Sheppey, the plant receives incinerator ash from a new Energy from Waste Plant constructed for Kent Enviropower at Allington near Maidstone.

Severe planning constraints limited the height of the plant to 6.5 metres. Portasilo`s plant, conceived and developed jointly by Portasilo, WRG and WRG`s consultants, McLellan & Partners, was designed to fit within this limitation.

Two 86 cubic metre working capacity silos receive deliveries from bulk tankers. The silos are to Portasilo’s horizontal silo design. Each is mounted on load cells for accurate inventory control and to ensure adequate spare capacity to receive a full tanker load. The latest Portasilo silo safety systems minimises risk of over filling or over pressurising and resultant dust emissions.

Two independent streams were installed each incorporates a silo with its own discharge and transfer system, with screw conveyors transferring the ash to one of the ash conditioners. Each of these has twin shafts with paddles to ensure a homogeneous, conditioned, dust free material with a minimum of excess moisture.

These systems have been designed to gravity discharge directly into articulated dump truck with 11te load of conditioned ash within 12 minutes, inclusive of start up and run down time to clear the conditioner.

The conditioning and articulated dump truck loading facility is entirely contained within a steel framed, clad building within this height limitation.

Portasilo provided a complete turnkey installation, which includes silos, screw conveyors, ash conditioners, water tanks and the steel framed; clad building with all necessary access platforms and stairways.

All site services were supplied by Portasilo including compressed air system, water pumps and piping, site wiring, and a full control package.
