New Haith Press for Burlington Slate.

- Quarrying
Established in 1843 when William Cavendish, Lord Burlington (later to become seventh Duke of Devonshire) brought together all the independent groups of quarrymen to form Burlington Slate Limited the company today is still owned by descendants of the Cavendish family.
Today, stone is cut from the quarry using diamond wires, a technique which is less damaging to the environment than the conventional process of blasting, and one with produces more usable material.
Once extracted the stone is cut, shaped and finished by local craftsmen using both modern machinery and traditional techniques: cleft or riven slates are still formed by the river working the stone along its natural grain. Quality comes naturally with a material 400 million years in the making and in converting that natural material to modern building components Burlington operates an ISO 9002 Quality Assurance system.
At the Kirkby-in-Furniss operation water treatment is an important element of the production process. Looking to replace an existing aged machine, Burlington Slate turned to Haith Industrial of Worksop, for a replacement. Using their extensive expertise in water treatment Haith successfully designed, manufactured and supplied a replacement machine for a revised system.
Utilising the existing water treatment plant philosophy the new machine interfaces directly into the existing wash plant that Burlington Slate currently operate. Haith manufactured and supplied a new 800 x 800 x 15 chamber x 40mm cake, automatic sidebar filter press. Mounted in the original location the press was supplied with a 6 x 3 metres wide penthouse structure which is supported 2.7 metres high on a pre-fabricated galvanized platform with access via a staircase and personnel access door.
The revised system is designed to provide a closed loop providing high quality supernatant water for re-use and a sludge cake for disposal. An ultrasonic level control device to monitor the volume of the slurry buffer tank and to prevent the press feed pump from running dry was supplied and new heavy-duty internal agitation paddles mounted onto steel supports within the existing slurry buffer tank completed the project.
Haith designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned the new press, penthouse and support structure; civils work was completed by Burlington engineers.
Gary Tappenden " Maintenance Supervisor, Commented, "Haith supplied a reliable and robust system that has met all our operating criteria. The project was completed efficiently and within the agreed schedule."
