New 250-tonne class excavator from Liebherr.

- 18th September 2006
- Quarrying
Liebherr is introducing a new 250-tonne class excavator. The R 9250 Litronic is the successor to the R 994 Litronic, which has been in production since 1986 and has enjoyed international success with more than 200 units sold.
Technologies already proven in the large mining and quarrying models have been incorporated into this new excavator - in particular, the advanced design of the electronic, electrical and hydraulic systems and the robust and durable specification of the mechanical sections and constructional steelwork. In designing and developing this new production machine, Liebherr engineers have drawn on many years of experience gained from the deployment of the company's excavators throughout the world.
The R 9250 is powered by a 12-cylinder Cummins turbo-charged diesel engine rated at 960 kW (1,290HP). The standard version of this new large excavator is equipped with a 9m gooseneck boom, a 4m stick and a 15m³ backhoe bucket.
With a 15% larger bucket capacity than the R 994 which it supersedes, 42% higher swing torque and exceptional digging capabilities, the 250 tonnes R 9250 Litronic is set to deliver even greater productivity. Only three bucket loads are required to load an 80 tonnes dump truck, or four to five bucket loads for a 120 tonnes dump truck.
The driver's cab on the R 9250 Litronic is identical to the well-proven R 996 Litronic as far as size, specification and ergonomic design are concerned. It is fully air-conditioned and the driver is protected against sunlight and noise by blinds, tinted windows and high quality sound insulation. The driver's seat can be adjusted to cater for the individual size and weight of the driver. The generously dimensioned glazing provides an excellent view of the work area and, because of its comfort and ergonomic layout, the cab provides ideal conditions for maintaining maximum operator efficiency throughout the day.
The electro-hydraulic control system in the R 9250 Litronic ensures optimum response and precision and makes the machine easy and safe to operate. The driver can obtain up-to-the-minute operational data via the ergonomically designed monitoring display.
Improved serviceability was another important goal in the development of the new R 9250 Litronic. The engine and pump compartment is spacious, allowing service personnel access in a standing position and offering easy access to the drive components for maintenance. The passageway between the engine compartment and the counterweight also cuts down service time. All service points on the R 9250 Litronic are arranged for easy access and - where possible - are assembled at a central point. For example, the hydraulically activated service panel located at chest height at the rear of the uppercarriage offers optimum access to the service points for lubricants, various oils, windscreen washer fluid, oil change, and for fuel.
The first production model R 9250 was subjected to exhaustive field trials, where all aspects of the new design were put to the test under real conditions. The test engineers, from Liebherr’s Colmar factory where this machine is manufactured, carried out a large number of measurements on a variety of stress points in order to establish, through finite element calculations, the real-life long-term performance of the steel structures. During this six-month continuous trial, experienced service and sales staff had the opportunity to thoroughly familiarise themselves with the excavator. The final fine-tuning of the machine incorporated not only the results of a host of technical measurements but also the critical opinions of experienced specialists. This has ensured that the R 9250 can deliver the reliability and efficiency that mining and quarrying companies all over the world have come to expect from Liebherr.
With the launch of the R 9250 Litronic, Liebherr is adding a new model designation to its mining and quarrying excavator programme. The initial "9" continues to be the product identifier number for hydraulic excavators but this is now followed by a three-digit number representing the operating weight category for the particular excavator.
