777 Group Invests in Powerscreen Recycling Plant

Blue Machinery, the distributor for Powerscreen plant and equipment, has supplied and installed a major recycling plant for 777 Group at their Croydon premises, for the processing and reclamation of saleable materials from C&D waste. The complete and under-cover plant has been based around Powerscreen’s largest trommel screener, the Galaxy 933, and was the very first Galaxy to be purchased after its launch. Other Powerscreen equipment supplied by Blue Machinery for this impressive recycling plant includes two air blower density separators for extracting light materials, two overband magnets for the removal of tramp metals, a 12-bay conveyor belt picking station and, for the initial shredding and reduction of the input raw material, a Powerscreen Powershredder 1800. The entire recycling plant is housed in a purpose-built structure, which features air filtration, water-mist dust suppression and sound insulation to ensure the best possible environmental protection. The recycling plant in Croydon has the potential to treat around 1000 tonnes of C&D and associated waste material every day.

777 Group is a multi-disciplined organisation specialising in demolition, waste management and asbestos removal. 777 Group’s demolition expertise, using the latest high-technology specialist plant and equipment, and asbestos removal fully compliant with the ARCA Audit Accreditation Scheme, is augmented by a Waste Management Division so that the company can provide its national customer base with a complete "one-stop-shop" for all aspects of recycling and reclamation alongside the demolition activities. Within the Waste Management Division, the company operates over 200 roll-on-off vehicles, a large skip hire fleet, clearance of building and demolition waste, a road sweeping service, licensed asbestos disposal, excavation and treatment of contaminated soil and reclamation of quality recycled secondary aggregates and saleable products from C & D waste raw materials.

There is considerable synergy between the various 777 Group divisions, where customers can take advantage of each operational expertise separately or, as is becoming more frequent, a turnkey service combining all the specialisations working together as a co-operative and integrated unit.

Incoming raw waste material at the Croydon facilities is largely comprised of C&D waste from 777 Group’s own demolition and site clearance contracts and, by investing in the latest recycling plant and equipment, the company has a target of 95% reclamation with a mere 5% going to landfill, which is a significant contribution towards the reduction of landfill tipping while making optimum use of clean reclaimables. All incoming waste is processed through the slow-speed shredder prior to passing on to the Galaxy 933 Trommel for screening and separating. The 12-bay picking station provides manual separation and stockpiling via chutes of the oversize elements with the overband magnets removing ferrous materials and the TR blower extracting lightweights, such as polystyrene, cardboard and sheet plastics.

The extracted reclaimed materials are all put to good use. Crushed stone of 75mm and down is ideal for haul road substrate, the metals extracted are sold on to foundries, shredded wood is destined for chipboard and other similar end-products, paper and board is sold on for pulping and fines are employed as landfill cover.

The Galaxy 933, the heart of the recycling plant, is a high-capacity trommel which can process up to 200 tonnes per hour using an electric friction 4-wheel drive system with four 15kW drives. Designed specifically for C&D waste, DSW, reclaiming topsoil, composting applications and wood chippings treatment, the new Galaxy 933 is the largest trommel in the Powerscreen range and is aimed at high volume recycling operations.

The trommel drum on the Galaxy 933 is a generous 2.7m diameter X 10m length, giving a screening area of just under 60m². The screen angle can be adjusted at up to 4º and the variable speed drum can be set between 13 and 17RPM. The reversible drive is operated to "rock" the drum in order to clear blockages or material build-up. The drum screen itself is available in one continuous mesh size, or can be split 50/50 or 60/40, depending on customer’s requirements. Six independent spring-loaded brushes are standard, with brush cleaners also available.

Optional extras on the Galaxy 933 include horizontal welded scroll punch plate drum; an inclined drum fitted with individual woven mesh or punch plate panels; stairs and walkway on the trommel frame.

With low maintenance, integral discharge chute, easy access to trommel drum and a full dust canopy, the new Galaxy 933 is quiet in operation and both user and environmentally friendly.
