Blue Scotland recently organised an organics recycling and biomass open day event in partnership with Falkirk Council, which was held at their 2.5 hectares Kinneil Kerse Recycling Centre at Bo'ness. Aimed at promoting the range of plant and equipment Blue Scotland offers to these burgeoning markets and clearly demonstrating the environmental and economic benefits of this form of recycling, the event was an undoubted success with over 200 guests attending over the two days. Many of the visitors were AfOR (Association for Organics Recycling) members with a particular interest in this important aspect of recycling and composting technolgies. Twelve machines were brought to the site, with eight of them working on a wide variety of materials handling and processing tasks and five of them recent additions to the Blue product ranges. This impressive demonstration was Blue Scotland's largest open days event to date, reinforcing the company's position as probably the number one equipment distributor and solutions provider in the Scottish recycling sector.

New Machines on Show and Demonstration
From Doppstadt, the recently launched DW-3060 Bio Power shredder and the SM-620 Star Screen were put through their paces.

The DW-3060 Bio Power is a slow-speed shredder, capable of multiple roles. Woodwaste can be shredded to specification in a single pass and, when set up with all the available comb extensions, this machine produces a quality end-product at a rate of up to 50 tonnes per hour with 54% at -80mm. With minimal screening of oversize, the shredded woodwaste is ready for direct supply to the fast-growing biofuel market. This is an extremely economical way of processing large volumes of biomass from recycled wood, generating significant savings on processing costs per tonne; calculations have shown that a saving of £6 per hour is achievable when compared with a high-speed shredder. Green waste can also be shredded with the new Bio Power to the same particle size produced by a high-speed shredder but with a considerably longer wearpart life, extended maintenance intervals and an impressive reduction in comparative running costs.

The new Doppstadt SM-620 Star Screen features the well-proven screening drum construction with interior helix, which enables space-saving horizontal machine installation. Designed and built for the shredding of domestic, green, C&D waste and woodwaste this machine is also ideal for the production of biomass and RDF. Replaceable screening drums, a variety of ancillary equipment and choice of mesh sizes allows this flexible machine to be adjusted and reconfigured for a wide variety of screening tasks and feed material. An efficient mechanical power transmission features direct chain wheel drive, with geared motors at the drum surface, and the variable speed provides optimum adjustment for regulation of the screening quality. State-of-the-art SPS control makes for easy operation, precise adjustment and access to the machines' performance and operating data.

Compost and soil turning equipment by Backhus was well represented, with the new 16.30 Compost Turner and the model 16.50 Straddle Turner gaining particular interest while working the compost windrows on site.

The Backhus 16.30 Compost Turner is the latest a whole range of high technology compost and soil turners and trapezoidal turning machines, using the site-proven roto-milling technique. Designed and built specifically for the essential turning and milling of windrows in the composting process, the self-propelled Backhus 16.30 is compact, robust, highly productive and benefits from the productivity and low maintenance characteristics of infinitely variable hydraulic drive. The Backhus 16.30 Compost Turner is capable of processing a heap width of up to 3 metres, a heap height of up to 1.30 metres and has a continuous drive speed of up to 50 metres per minute.

Working in tandem were two new Kiverco recycling units - a 620 Trommel and a Mobile Picking Station.

Blue offers a new range of Kiverco Mobile Picking Stations which can be customised to virtually any size to suit customers' applications.  Pickers can be positioned on either or both sides of the variable speed conveyor and, for enhanced working conditions for operatives, fully enclosed cabin work stations have heating and lighting. Discharge chutes can be positioned as required and in any number for convenient "binning" of unwanted or recyclable materials in their respective stockpiles.

The Kiverco 620 Trommel is specifically designed for the primary screening and separation of commingled recyclables, MSW, skip waste, commercial, industrial and C&D waste as either a stand-alone machine or as part of an MRF installation. Materials can be sorted at rates of up to 20 tonnes per hour or 60 tonnes per hour for MSW. The Kiverco 620 Trommel features a screening drum set at an angle of 5º and with an infinitely variable rotation speed of up to 15rpm. The drum is equipped with removable punched plate screen sections and there is a variety of screen plate apertures to suit customers' specific requirements; there is also a selection of woven mesh or rubber-coated screen plates available. The version on show was the mobile crawler tracked machine which, together with the mobile picking station, provides the ability to move the entire recycling plant quickly and easily to material stockpiles rather than the costly and time-consuming process of moving the material to the plant.

Working alongside the launch machines was a selection of well-established recycling machinery for organic material recycling and biomass production. This included the popular and versatile Doppstadt AK-430K high-speed mobile shredder and a DH-608 wood chipper processing composting materials and large logs respectively. On static display were the standard Doppstadt DW-3060 and compact AK-230 shredders and the recently introduced "market entry" Powerscreen Warrior 800 mobile screening plant.

A Falkirk Council spokesman said "Falkirk Council were happy to support this event, which showed how new and improved recycling and composting equipments and technologies can assist Councils and other major recyclers in reducing the quantity of waste sent to landfill and increase the use of secondary/recycled materials".
