Manifesto for rail freight growth

Freightliner is pleased to welcome the launch of the Manifesto for Rail Freight Growth published today (Tuesday 8 September 2009) by the Rail Freight Group and the Rail Freight Operators Association.

The timing of the launch, just before the political party conference season will act as a reminder to politicians from all parties of the benefits increasing rail freight can bring to the UK. It is particularly important in the current economic climate that the rail freight industry demonstrates the value for money and the considerable benefits it offers the UK.

Lindsay Durham, Head of Rail Strategy, Freightliner Group Ltd, said, "Increasing the volume of freight moved by rail instead of by lorries will contribute to reducing road congestion and save lives lost through accidents on the roads. Department of Transport figures show that moving freight by rail can reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 70%."

"It is vital that a stable structure and cohesive plan are put in place to enable the long term development and growth of rail freight. This will give confidence to the private sector to continue to invest, so that rail freight operators can offer ever more efficient and customer-focused logistic solutions, whilst helping the UK reach its carbon reduction targets."
