Caterpillar® introduces the CD54 Drum Steer Vibratory Asphalt Compactor

Caterpillar® introduces the CD54 Drum Steer Vibratory Asphalt Compactor
Caterpillar Inc. of Peoria, Ill. US, has announced a new addition to its asphalt compactor line. The Caterpillar CD54 Drum Steer Vibratory Asphalt Compactor features front and rear vibratory and driving split drums, 1.3 m offset width for a maximum compaction width of 3.0 m, optimum maneuverability with sensitive to the touch steering, all-round visibility and many other features that will provide customers with a versatile machine for their asphalt compaction jobs. The new CD54 will allow Caterpillar dealers to continue to compete in the growing
8 - 11.3 metric ton class. Typical applications include highways, city streets, county roads, lane additions, industrial sites, overlays, airport runways and other medium to high-production paving jobs.

The Caterpillar CD54 Drum Steer Vibratory Asphalt Compactor offers a versatile machine that produces optimum results on all types of asphalt mixes. From tender to harsh mixes, this Cat asphalt compactor delivers the right amount of force to get density without compromising smoothness or productivity. Front and rear split drums, wide offset feature, optimum power, and reliable water spray system deliver unmatched performance in adverse conditions. The operator station provides all-round visibility that is vital to a compactor that operates in confined spaces and close to obstructions.

The CD54 can be used on all phases of asphalt compaction, reducing the need for a variety of rollers. It is extremely maneuverable and its large compaction width at maximum offset means you can cover mats faster with less chance of heat loss prior to compaction.

This machine is intended for production-oriented customers winning over operators with their easy-to-use controls, optimum visibility, and comfortable operating station. Mechanics and service personnel will appreciate the addition of the machine ECMs to assist with troubleshooting procedures.

Engine

The new CD54 is powered by a four-cylinder Cat® 3054C Turbo-charged engine. The 3054C engine provides 74.5 kW (101 hp) rated at 2200 rpm. This engine does not require derating at altitudes up to 3000 meters and meets E.U. Stage II off-highway emission requirements.

Water Spray System

The single 750-liter capacity water tank provides hours of operation. The design provides good machine visibility to the rear drum. Water system controls are conveniently located on the front control panel. The thumb switch is located on the propel lever and controls spray bar operation. The system utilizes a single water tank located behind the operating station. The slim and compact design offers good visibility to the front, rear and to either side of the machine. Two fold-down steps on the left side of the machine and handrail facilitate accessibility during water refill operations. A sight gauge viewable from inside the cab and also from ground level allows the tank water level to be monitored at all times. The Cat dual water pumps are designed to be the most reliable and durable water pump available. These pumps feature full electrical sheathing, pin connectors, and all-weather protection in order to keep moisture and corrosion out. Excellent filtration is provided by a triple filtration system that minimizes clogs. Filters are highly accessible and can be quickly removed for cleaning without the use of special tools limiting downtime.

Dual Amplitude/Dual Frequency

The dual amplitude, dual frequency system utilizes single amplitude with each frequency. A switch on the steering console automatically matches amplitude and frequency for complete control from the operating station. The CD54 is simple to setup correctly so that the operator does not have to guess about vibratory operation.

Split Drums

The Caterpillar patented split drums on the CD54 Drum Steer Asphalt Compactor provide optimum maneuverability that does not compromise the mat finish. An inside turning radius of 2.8 meters significantly increases maneuverability for this medium to high-production asphalt compactor. An effective split drum propel system lets you use the tight turning radius without damaging the hot mat.

The CD54 split drum drive system features an electronically actuated flow divider that prevents unequal drum half rotation assuring balanced full time torque. To avoid tearing the material in tight turns, drum halves need to rotate at different speeds. The CD54 split drum drive system, with maintenance-free preloaded tapered roller bearings, also features motor speed sensing that provides additional flow to the outside drum drive motor assuring proportional speed between the drum halves.

Steering System

A three-meter coverage at maximum offset means you cover thin mats faster with less chance of heat loss prior to compaction. Ease of operation is provided through fingertip control at the propel lever for one handed operation. An audio alarm alerts operator when the drums are aligned-operator can concentrate on mat conditions.

The CD54 features three steering modes: front, rear, and coordinated front and rear. Coordinated steering produces 2.8 meter inside turning radius for maximum jobsite maneuverability.

The CD54 features sensitive to the touch steering. The benefit of electronic steering is combined with the feel of hydraulic steering. The operator gets a more realistic steering feedback, extremely beneficial when operating adjacent to vertical barriers or obstructions in the mat. Steering wheel friction increases when the drum encounters resistance, a feel unique to the CD54.

Operating Station

The ROPS/FOPS cab with full floor-to-ceiling glass on front and rear corners provide an unobstructed line of sight to the drum edges, drum surfaces, and both sides of the machine. The right hand window in the cab can be easily opened for additional side visibility when required. Optimum visibility to the drums enables the operators to supply the correct amount of water to the drum surfaces, but also ensures optimum view when operating in offset steering mode. The multi-position seating provides a variety of adjustments that help the operator stay focused and in control. Multiple seat adjustments allow the operator to customize weight, height, armrests, and the backrest to suit their individual needs.

The CD54 is equipped with the standard Automatic Speed Control (ASC) system and an ergonomic propel lever.

Electrical System

The electrical system utilizes a machine Electronic Control Module (ECM) that offers better machine control and easier serviceability. A 12-volt electric starting system with an 80-amp alternator is standard. A 12-volt (1000 amp), maintenance-free Cat battery supplies electrical power. The battery is located in the engine compartment. The electrical wiring is color-coded, numbered and the heavy-duty cable connections of the battery are soldered to increase reliability.

Serviceability

These machines are designed for ease and speed of service. All daily and routine service points are accessible from ground level. Swing out doors provide access to filters and service points. Extended service intervals reduce service time and increase machine availability.

  • Maintenance-free hitch design provides unmatched reliability and the optional bio-oil capability offers an environmentally friendly alternative to standard oil.
  • Tapered roller bearings in patented split drum and articulation joints are sealed for life requiring no greasing and servicing.
  • Electronic control modules (ECM) for the propel and vibratory systems compatible with other Cat compactors, making diagnostic efforts quick and easy.
  • Sight gauges let you easily check radiator coolant and hydraulic oil levels as well as engine air filter restriction.
  • Standard pressure taps allow quick diagnosis of the entire hydraulic system.
