Shredders Combine in C&D Waste Recycling and Residual Waste Volume Reduction

Shredders Combine in C&D Waste Recycling and Residual Waste Volume Reduction
Pinden has been a leading recycling specialist for decades, recognising the economic and environmental benefits at a very early stage in the industry's development.  The Group has been working Pinden Quarry, Longfield, near Dartford in Kent for many years, extracting chalk whilst creating an efficient and environmentally sensitive landfill site and operating a burgeoning recycling and reclamation facility. In a continuing investment in modern processing equipment, as recycling volumes continue to grow, Pinden recently purchased Powerscreen and Doppstadt shredding and screening equipment from appointed distributors Blue Group for both the quarrying and recycling operations.

Pinden operates a large fleet of skips and roll-on-off vehicles, providing a collection service to authorities, demolition contractors, builders and developers throughout southern England. The group receives a constant stream of C&D waste at the Longfield site, where maximum recyclable materials are extracted, amongst which are large volumes of woodwaste, recycled aggregates, ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals, soil fines, board and paper. Woodwaste is a major part of the material's content and this is shredded through a slow-speed Powerscreen Powershredder 2400 which in turn feeds a high-speed Doppstadt AK-430K, complete with overband magnet to recover ferrous metals, creating a selection of chippings for both board manufacture and biomass for energy generation.

Residual waste materials destined for landfill are also processed through the Powershredder 2400, significantly reducing the weight and volume. This secondary waste treatment process reduces tip-to-landfill and saves on the costs of disposal and transportation, with all the associated environmental and financial benefits that this brings.

In the chalk quarry at Longfield, Pinden is extracting, crushing and screening high quality chalk for both civil engineering use and, as fines, agricultural soil improvement material. Here, a Powerscreen Warrior 1400 mobile screening plant screens and separates up to three product sizes, stockpiling via three hydraulically adjustable conveyors.

All three plants are crawler-mounted models, allowing site mobility for the equipment to move to wherever it is required during the operations. Movement around the site and fast set-up times add to the equipments' versatility and productivity.

Pinden Group director, Stephen Bishop, is clearly happy with the company's recent purchases from Blue Group and, confirming this satisfaction, has ordered a Kiverco Recycling Plant, which will be delivered and installed early in the New Year. "We are a comparatively new customer of Blue Group and are enjoying a fruitful relationship with the team at Blue London. Our new recycling plant is based around a Kiverco trommel conveyor-linked to a fully covered three-bay picking station which, once installed and commissioned, will play a significant role in our continuing efforts to extract and recycle maximum materials from the large volumes of incoming raw waste. We are planning a series of open days in early 2009 to show customers and the industry at large what we are achieving here at Longfield". Blue London Managing Director Eugene Donnelly commented "We are proud to be working  with Pinden in their endeavour to extend their belief in the necessity to recycle as much material as possible.'

The Powershredder 2400

The Powershredder 2400 features a number of different tools and shaft configurations for the efficient and high volume reduction of household, industrial, building and green waste, timber, plastics and logging/sawmill waste. Producing a consistent and uniform material sizing, the machine has a low dust and noise emission levels and has a small "footprint" for its high throughput - and the crawler undercarriage makes it highly mobile and agile on site. Automatic and fixed reverse shafts have low wear-and-tear, a long shredding life and low maintenance, produce optimum processing of the widest possible range of materials. A generously proportioned low feed-in tipping hopper allows the shredder to be fed by conveyor, excavator and grab or loading shovel. The hydraulically folding 1400mm wide discharge conveyor, with chevron belting, has a discharge height of 4 metres for good stockpiling capacity, loading directly into tippers or direct feed into a secondary separating processor such as the Doppstadt AK-430K used by Pinden. The conveyor is also hydraulically angle adjustable between 15º and 34º. Pinden's machine is equipped with a large overband magnet for effective removal of tramp metals.

The Doppstadt AK-430K

The Doppstadt AK-430K Mobile Shredder is designed and built specifically for green and wood waste processing, with large volume capacities for the effective and efficient chipping and shredding of tree-trunks, roots, pallets and building timber waste, green and organic waste. This crawler-mounted mobile version is agile and manoeuvrable and can be quickly and easily moved around the site.

A high-speed shredder, the Doppstadt AK-430K has a number of operational, safety and maintenance features. These include hydraulically folding conveyor for swift set-up time, large maintenance access doors and centralised lubrication points, patented load sensing material feeding system and easily replaceable flail tips to suit the materials that are to be shredded.

The Warrior 1400

The Powerscreen Warrior 1400 iscreening plant has a highly aggressive screenbox with hydraulically adjustable screen angles. The bottom deck features a speedharp, or self-cleaning ball deck system, and bottom screens can be easily accessed for changing and maintenance.

The large hopper - with Hardox steel sides and an hydraulically folding rear door to accommodate direct feed from a crusher working in tandem - has a generous capacity and the variable speed incline feeder belt is equipped with impact bars, discharging onto the screenbox from above in order to eliminate bridging.

All the stockpiling conveyors are oversize, hydraulically folding and angle adjustable. The mid-size material falls directly on to the mid-product conveyor, which also features a special "slide-up" system that allows easy access to the bottom deck meshes for cleaning, overhaul or replacement.
