Crushing success for Solids Radar.

- Quarrying
At one of the UK’s largest granite quarries, VEGA have successfully solved crusher feed and silo level applications with their new non-contact radar for solids VEGAPULS 68.
The throughput of the crusher varies between 200-1000 tonnes per hour. This is done using the level in the feed hopper above which is fed via a belt conveyor. The speed of the conveyor is adjusted and maintained by the level system to ensure the crusher is not 'choked' or runs out. This makes the measurement reliability and repeatability quite critical in this application.
The measurement was originally made with a high power ultrasonic level sensor supplied by VEGA almost 20 years ago, but this was occasionally ‘blinded’ by dust and build up. This sound based measurement can also be affected by the high process noise levels in these applications too. So, after many years service the ultrasonic has been replaced by a smaller, yet more reliable, radar device.
The 2-wire loop powered VEGAPULS 68 Microwave Radar for solids benefits from narrower measuring beam, totally unaffected by dust, noise, temperature, pressure and air movement. It can monitor closer to filling streams and can handle surface angles of repose. An integral 'aiming' swivel ensures the correct part of the process is measured. The unit has worked well and based on its performance, the site has also replaced silo level systems with the radar. A New Era in solids level measurement from VEGA continues in aggregates and bulk solids handling.
