Backhus 16-50 in Compost Production for Nutramulch

Backhus 16-50 in Compost Production for Nutramulch

Nutramulch UK Limited has invested in a considerable amount of recycling equipment over the past few months - all from distributor Blue Machinery Plc, with whom Nutramulch has built up a close working relationship during the past years. The latest addition to the Nutramulch fleet is a Backhus 16-50 Compost Turner, which is busy working on windrows at Nutramulch’s composting facility in Leeds. The Leeds site, which started up in the summer last year, has been developed as part of the company’s burgeoning composting operation, augmenting their well-established waste processing sites at Hull and Kirton Lindsey (Scunthorpe). The company has also purchased a number of Doppstadt chippers and shredders from Blue Machinery in 2005, not only for their own compost and board chip production sites but also as part of a growing and modern fleet of recycling plants for contract hire with operators throughout the UK. Nutramulch UK Limited works closely with local authorities, major regional industries, waste management organisations and recycling stations, processing wood and green waste raw materials into agricultural and landscaping compost, soil improvers and top dressings for grass and turf producers. The company also provides a delivery and spreading service for their many agricultural customers.

Nutramulch was started some 6 years ago by Robert Lewis (Managing Director) and Alison Lewis (Financial Director), with Robert Lewis coming from a farming background. This experience and knowledge of the agricultural, financial and allied industries has stood them in good stead in providing exactly what their customers want.
Incoming wood and green waste raw materials are shredded down to 40mm-50mm chip size and this is then spread on to the concrete based windrows to undergo carefully controlled composting. Having previously used loading shovels for compost turning, Nutramulch reports immediate benefits and improvements in the process with their new Backhus machine - in terms of speed, efficiency and a noticeably better mix; in fact, one of Nutramulch’s regular agricultural customers is quoted as saying "Yields have increased by as much as 20% and I’m looking forward to my next batch!". The target volume for the Leeds operation is around 60,000 tonnes per annum and, on the basis of at least six turning processes per batch, this represents a significant amount of work for the Backhus!

The Backhus 16-50 Compost Turner is one of a whole range of high technology compost and soil turners and trapezoidal turning machines, using the site-proven roto-milling technique and marketed throughout the UK by Blue Machinery Plc. Designed and built specifically for the essential turning and milling of materials in the composting process, Backhus equipment is compact and robust, highly productive and a typical example of German engineering excellence, with TUV certification and a quality management system to EN ISO 9001. The productivity and low maintenance benefits of infinitely variable hydraulic drive, ergonomically designed operators’ cabs and true versatility contribute to the success of this leading marque.

The Backhus 16-50 compost turner is capable of processing a heap width of up to 5 metres, with a heap height of up to 2.40 metres, and has a continuous drive speed of up to 50 metres per minute.
